The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Situated less than 3km from La Rochelle on the west coast of France, Ile de Re boasts a sunshine record more or less equal to the Côte dâAzur on the Mediterranean.
Ile de Re, with a coastline stretching some 70km, is connected to the mainland by an elegant 3km bridge and is made up of ten villages, where the traditional architecture of the region prevails. The little low houses, whitewashed walls, blue or green shutters and a riot of colourful hollyhocks typify this charming island.
To trully apreciate this enchanting island, you need to relax, move down a gear, and leave your car parked up. A network of 87km of flat cycle tracks means that all the family can discover the villages, beaches, forests and salt marshes at a leisurely pace and for the most part, well away from the roads. Little fishing and yacting harbours, village markets, ecomuseums and bird sanctuaries are all easily accessible by bike. There are numerous cycle hire shops with all manner of two and three wheeled inventions to transport even the very young and no hill is over 19m above sea level.
The Ile de Re / Saint-Clement area
SAINT CLEMENT DES BALEINES
The village of St Clément des Baleines which is composed of six hamlets stands on the western end of Ile de Ré. The village runs from La Cote Sauvage to the sandy beach of La Conche, on the edge of the forest. The panoramic view from the top of the lighthouse is astonishing.
La Conche des Baleines beach is one of the nicest beaches of the island. The salt marshes near the nature reserve join the forest and the village together.
Le Phare des Baleines (lighthouse) which is 57 metres high was inaugurated in 1854. At the top of the staircase, you have an amazing view over the beaches of La Conche, la Cote Sauvage , the forest and the salt marshes. Visible fifty kilometres around, the lighthouse is recognizable by the four beams of light it sends every 15 seconds.
The old tower: It is 27 metres high and was ordered by Colbert. It started functioning in 1682. It was used as a seamark and as a maritime supervision point also. At night the light was fed with fish oil and coal. It was replaced by the lighthouse in 1854 and became a listed building.
The Phare des Baleineaux is four kilometres off the coast. It was built on a high sand bank to warn sailors that there were reefs.
L'écluse de «La Moufette»: The first fish locks of the Ile de Ré are about a thousand years old. They were essential to help ensure food to the locals. These sea meadows surrounded by a curvilinear wall were flooded at rising tide and trapped fish at ebb tide.
The last lock in St Clément des Baleines, called âLa Moufetteâ, stands between the coast and the Phare des Baleines. It was repaired by voluntary workers after the storm of 1999 which caused serious damage.
La Pyramide This four metres high obelisk was used as a diurnal seamark as well as the Clocher d'Ars (painted in black and white) and the lighthouses.
