The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Situated at 13 km from La Rochelle on the west coast of France, Ile de Re is connected to the mainland by an elegant 3km toll bridge. The town of La Rochelle itself has a fast TGV train service to Paris and La Rochelle-Laleu airport is only 7km away from the island.
With a coastline stretching some 70km, Ile de Re is made up of ten villages, where the traditional architecture of the region prevails. The little low houses, whitewashed walls, blue or green shutters and a riot of colourful hollyhocks typify this charming island.
To truly appreciate this enchanting island, you need to relax, move down a gear, and leave your car parked up. A network of over 100km of flat cycle tracks means that all the family can discover the villages, beaches, and forests at a leisurely pace and for the most part, well away from the roads. You will enjoy discovering the marshes where oysters are grown and salt, known as ‘white gold’, is harvested. The island is known for its production of ‘fleur de sel’ (flower of salt).
From your Ile de Re accommodation, little fishing and yachting harbours, village markets, ecomuseums and bird sanctuaries are all easily accessible by bike. There are numerous cycle hire shops with all manner of two and three wheeled inventions to transport even the very young and no hill is over 19m above sea level.
The best beaches for sunbathing on Ile de Re are in the south where you can choose from 10km of white fine sand to lay your towel. Le Bois Plage en Re, one of the most popular and picturesque and like many of the southern beaches, has a beach club for children. For quieter beaches, head for those on the southwest coast, close to Phare des Baleines (the lighthouse).
Horse riding is also popular in Ile de Re. While on the water, visitors are spoilt for choice with canoeing, sailing, boat trips, windsurfing, water skiing and surfing.
And the locals - the Rétois –as they are known – are noted for their hospitality on this sun-kissed island.
The Ile de Re / La Noue area
The areas of La Noue and des Grenettes are part of the village Sainte Marie de Ré, on the beautiful southern side of Ile de Ré. There are some lovely beaches as well as oyster farms and beach fishing.
Sainte Marie has wonderful little streets and alleys with ancient wells, bursting with flowers. There are 2 lovely squares with bars, cafés and other shops and daily markets: la Place des Tilleuls at La Noue, and la Place Antioche at Sainte Marie de Ré. The atmosphere is welcoming and vibrant with shops and locals selling their produce â both in the day and evening.
Sainte Marie has been recognised as a Station Verte Vacances (an eco-friendly resort) since 2002 and is primarily a family resort, especially noted for its rural feel and vineyards which are still of major interest to the village. There are many excellent cycle rides and pedestrian paths. There are 2 bike hire shops at La Noue and at Sainte Marie.
Located at the seaside, the old lime kiln of La Noue houses the new Maison du Magayant. It presents the cultural, biological and environmental heritage of the island's foreshore. Here there is a permanent exhibition showing fish locks, oyster farming and fishing from the shore, the traditional Magayant way of life, and also the environmental protection of the islands beaches.
Considered the oldest village on ile de Re, there is also the Gothic bell tower of the Notre Dame de l'Assomption church. Tourist Office staff offer a guided visit of the church and old village.
For the more sporty, the Golf des Pertuis is in Sainte Marie de Ré, or there are sailing, boat trips, canoeing and horseriding. Or to be really pampered there is the Thalasso centre too.
There are many restaurants, bars, brasseries, pizzerias. Here are a few recommended by our clients: L'Antioche at the Place Antioche at Sainte Marie de Ré; Atalante at the Port Notre Dame, open all year with fresh local produce and an ocean view; Les Tilleuls and l'Escale at Place des Tilleuls at La Noue; Les Grenettes on the Bois Plage road.
As for shops, here again are some of those recommended by previous clients: Place Antioche has the post office, a butcher and boulangerie, a newsagents, a florists, a interior decor shop and a hairdressers; at La Noue there is a fishmongers, a boulangerie called La Nougatine, and La Biscuiterie, and delicatessen called La Cailletiere which sells regional produce and wines and a newsagents. There are also 2 taxi firms and local doctors and dentists if required.
