Further details outdoors:
It is great fun to stroll around the ancient ramparts which border the fishing port and fascinating to linger awhile and watch the oyster men bring in their precious cargo. Many of the old oyster huts have been transformed into artists workshops and craft stores and are a great place to find an interesting gift to take home.
If you take the car, or a bike, you will find a choice of magnificent sandy beaches. On the inland side, they are often flanked by pine forests and quite sheltered, or there are the wide open stretches of the atlantic coast with mile upon mile of fine sand.
The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Situated at less than 3km from La Rochelle, the ile de Re island benefits from a very high rate of sunshine hours, equal to the Côte d'Azur. The ile de Re Island is composed of ten villages, which respect the typical architectural tradition with over 70 kilometres of coast. Truly, it is the paradise on earth. Even the houses and the streets respect beautiful uniformity: White washed walls, green or blue shutters and hollyhocks… they really make this island a unique place. Finally, especially created, at the limit of the continent and at the border of the ocean, the ile de Re Island offers 87 km of cycling paths which permit many visitors to discover the villages, the hamlets, the beaches, the forests, the marshes.
The Médoc peninsula, with immense beaches on the Atlantic coast, fine, golden sand offered to the beach fans, charming seaside resorts, lakes and pine forest. The South Western French coast is privileged in its geographical situation and a recognised microclimate with more than 2300 hours of sun per year. Here, nature and sports are in dissociable. Everything is planned for a bracing and invigorating stay, such as walking on foot, on horseback, or riding a bike on the significant cycle tracks network and some excellent golf courses. This is also a paradise for surfers who come from all over the world to test their sporting skills. Bordeaux, is the regional capital of Aquitaine, and the most renowned vineyards such as Médoc, St Émilion, Graves and Sauternes are all nearby.
Travel inland from Bordeaux to Dordogne, one of the most beautiful natural regions in France, with slow rivers sometimes cutting through spectacular steep limestone valleys, riddled with caves, many containing world-famous prehistoric paintings.. A region proud of its gastronomic specialities (foie gras, truffles, cheeses, chocolate …), food lovers and gourmets will savour the traditions of good living and eating well. "Land of Prehistoric man", the Dordogne is bursting with superb prehistoric sites, which trace of the birth of human existence, such as the famous Lascaux caves. Nesting on a cliff, Nontron is famous for its hand-crafted knife with its pale wooden handle and carved motifs, it is the most ancient of folding knives. La Dordogne, land of contrast and of sweet living !! Places to discover : Visit the nice old town of Nontron : remnants of the town"s 13th century ramparts ; half-timbered houses and ancient quarters many houses dating from the 15-17th century. And the famous Périgord-Limousin National Park aswell as Villard caves, the Lascaux caves, and Limoges . Other activities in the Perigord include water sports, canoeing, tennis, horse-riding, horse-driven carriage, rides, walks and mountain-biking, lake and river fishing and golf..The region is dotted with small towns and villages, all typically French in character. Because this area has been inhabited since prehistoric times there is a wealth of sites and monuments to visit Brantome, Sarlat, Montbazillac, Bergerac, Périgueux, Les Eyzies (the Cro-Magnon Man). The whole region is dotted with chateaux or you can just relax and spend the day swimming in the many lakes and rivers, cycling through the quiet lanes or walking the marked footpaths.
The Ile d'Oleron area
To the south of Ile de Re and facing Rochefort, Ile d'Oleron is the largest of France's Atlantic coastal islands. Accessible by a toll-free road bridge, it enjoys its own, exceptionally sunny micro-climate and a quality of light that has attracted many an artist over the years. The beaches are a delight with a wide range of sporting activities. There are extensive, easy walking and cycling tracks, bird watching at Dolus Marais aux Oiseaux and bird and animal park at St Pierre d'Oleron. The little tourist train at St Trojan is popular with the children. A little further afield is the lively resort of Royan complete with Casino and La Rochelle makes a good day trip.
