The Goriska region
The place where the freshness of the Alps, the smelling scents of the Mediterranean and the Karst come together, is a unique piece of land. The Soča River (Isonzo), for many the most beautiful European river, carves the narrowest of gorges into the live rocks and imprints its riverbed on to the white gravel. In the valley of the Idrijca River, there lies the oldest Slovenian mining town Idrija, once the second biggest mercury mines in the world. The oldest part of the mine, the Antonij shaft, has been arranged for tourists.
Nearby the Regional Park Zgornja Idrijca starts with the Wild Lake (Divje jezero). Cerkno in Cerkljanska is a quickly developing tourist centre with a modern ski resort. Under the steep slopes of the Trnovski gozd forest there lies the Vipava Valley, a land of peaches, cherries and grapes. You can experience the most beautiful view of it from the edge of the plateau, perhaps through the Otliško okno window. In the valley below you can hear the source of Hubelj. The central town of the region is Ajdovščina, and near the source of the Vipava River there lies the town Vipava.
Idrija area
Črni Vrh is the main village on the large plateau, located at the regional road Godovič – Col – Ajdovščina. The village is surrounded by dark beech and pine forests which probably also gave the name to the village (Črni Vrh in Slovene means Black Peak). The area of Črni Vrh below the Javornik, the edge of the forest Trnovski gozd belonged to Vipava between the Middle Ages and the 19th century. The distinctively Karst area with countless disappearing streams, sinkholes and abysses is covered with meadows, pastures, settlements, solitary homesteads, wayside shrines and small chapels, all in all unspoilt natural environment.
Very attractive for easy recreation are walks in forests rich with herbs and forest fruits, game and numerous bird species. During the years the number of visitors, hikers, mountaineers, cyclists and skiers has been constantly increasing.
The main cultural-historic monument in Črni Vrh is the parish church of St. Jost with a long a vivid history: it was first a Gothic church, later turned into baroque style, expanded in the 19th century, burnt down in 1944 and newly restored in the past decades.
The monuments in the nearby park remind us on the two main men of merit of Črni Vrh: dr. Frančišek Lampe (1859 – 1900) was an important theologian, philosopher and the editor of the magazine Dom in svet (Home and world), and Matej Cigale (1819 – 1889) who was a lawyer, a linguist and a publicist.
The best known in the world among the people of Črni Vrh nowadays is the master of mosaic work, the Jesuit Marko Ivan Rupnik. At the main road there is an interesting stone-cut monument Smrekarjev križ dating from 1897. In front of the Primary school building there is a monument dedicated to the national hero Janko Premrl – Vojko (the national liberation war times). There is another memorial dedicated to him on the Brinov grič near Idrijski Log. On the way from Črni Vrh towards Ajdovščina it is worth making a stop at the neat chapel Kampelcova kapelica.
In the summer and the winter seasons a very appealing destination is the peak of the Javornik (1,241 m) with a view tower, offering views all the way to Istria in the south and the Triglav in the north, in case of nice weather, of course. On the Javornik there are the mountain hut Pirnatova koča and the astronomic observatory, both open to visitors, too. It is worth mentioning that the Astronomic Society Javornik is the biggest and oldest society of this type in Slovenia. In the village Gornje Lome there are the Ski centre Javornik and the Bike park Javornik.
Events: Margaret Sunday – July 20, when the locals celebrate the church feast (over 200 years of tradition) Bloudek cycling marathon
