About this location

The Turkish Aegean Coast region

Turkey's Mediterranean coastline is an alluring destination, renowned for its magnificent scenery with picturesque coves and rocky headlands, turquoise waters, golden beaches and pine forests.

The beautiful landscape, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean is the beginning of the Turquoise Coast, dominated by the mountains of the Taurus range whose cliffs plunge into the sea of intense blue.

Further along the Mediterranean you reach the region of Antalya known as the Turkish Riviera and, together with the Turquoise Coast, these make up the tourism capital of Turkey.

Simple villages share the water's edge with sophisticated resorts, and fishing vessels and pleasure yachts mingle together in the sheltered harbours.

Endless days of sunshine make it a paradise for boat cruises, sunbathing and swimming and numerous water sports, and there are a variety of restaurants and bars to round off a day on the water.

The coast also boasts a rich cultural legacy from early civilisations and is imbued with history and legend, found in ancient cities and at sites such as the fires of Chimaera at Olympos, and numerous ruins dotted about the countryside.

The apartment is located in the former fishing village of Içmeler, just a five-minute taxi or minibus ride from the bustling holiday centre of Marmaris, on the Aegean coast.

Içmeler has a mix of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes, and is quieter and more relaxing than its near neighbour Marmaris. Marmaris is 8km away and is easily accessible by dolmus (Turkish minibus local transport).

The sandy beach stretches along the bay and forms the perfect backdrop for either relaxing in the sun or taking

advantage of the wide selection of watersports on offer, which include jetskiing and waterskiing.

There is also a large waterpark between Içmeler and Marmaris, which makes a fun day out for the whole family.

Banks in Turkey open similar hours to here in the UK. There are plenty of cash machines in the the centre of Içmeler.

There is a wide selection of and restaurants in Içmeler, serving food from around the world - including Italian, Indian, Chinese, traditional Turkish and English staples such as steaks, fish & chips and roast beef & Yorkshire pudding.

There are also plenty of bars and a couple of nightclubs, while those seeking a noisier night out will find what they are looking for just up the coast in Marmaris.

There are plenty of hairdressers in Içmeler and prices are a fraction of those in the UK.

Men should try the traditional Turkish wet shave, which costs the equivalent of just a few pounds.

There is a wide range of shops, both large and small, in Içmeler.

Away from the larger supermarkets, and only for non-food products, haggling is the norm - and it can be fun! Don't be afraid to drive a hard bargain or to walk away if you are unhappy with the 'final' price offered.

Gold jewellery is a good buy and there is no shortage of jewellers in the area.

Içmeler has a weekly market every Wednesday, selling a wide variety of local goods, gifts and souvenirs.

There is also a market in Marmaris every Thursday.

Public phones are a much cheaper option and phone cards are available from shops and supermarkets.

Dial 00 44 for the UK, and drop the initial 0 of area codes and mobile phone numbers.
