The South East England / Kent region

The little town of Hythe sits in its own bay providing a mild, gentle climate. In the summer of 2009, Kent had the least rainfall of all the 48 English counties and basked in glorious sunshine for most of the season. Even in inclement weather, or for winter breaks there is much to see and do in Hythe or the surrounding areas. Kent is known as the Garden of England, famed for its gentle landscape, rolling hills and delightful orchards, tiny villages waiting to be explored, and some of the best pubs in the country!
The historic city of Canterbury crowned by the great Cathdral has medieval winding streets full of fascinating shops and houses as well as a modern shoppng centre. Dover, Deal and Walmer Castles are within easy reach for those with a taste for history. Leeds Castle, 'the loveliest castle in the world' was visited by the Tudor King Henry VIII and today offers castle tours, garden walks and even balloon flights! The elegant Georgian spa town of Tunbridge Wells is just over an hour away and here can be found shops, museums and the famous spring where visitors can still take a taste of the waters. The walled town of Rye with its cobbled streets just over the border into East Sussex is the location of the Mermaid Inn, once the haunt of the Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers! London is an hour and a half away with all the activites and bustle of the most exciting city in the world.
The Hythe, Kent area
Hythe itself is a small town with a long and fascinating High Street full of antique shops, gift shops as well as food and clothes shops. There is a safe shingle beach ideal for fishing and swimming, popular with windsurfers. Hythe is home to the Royal Military Canal built to repel invasion by Napoleon and which today provides opportunities for boating, fishing, walking and wildlife spotting. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely picnic on the Town Green whilst catching a weekend concert at the Bandstand. The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway, which is the world's smallest public railway is a must for adults and children alike as it takes travellers along the 13 mile track across Romney Marsh to Dungeness where fish and chips at the Pilot pub is a tradition!
Every two years Hythe hosts the Venetian Fete( next fete in 2011) on the canal where decorated floats sail along the canal during the day and are lit up by night followed by a spectacular firework display. Alternate years provide Hythe Festival Week dedicated to arts, music and fun days for children.
Port Lympne Wild Animal Park and Gardens (as featured on BBC1's 'Roar') is tucked away a mile from Hythe and is home to many rare and endangered species in settings as close to their natural habitat as possible. The 600 acres dedicated to the animals as well as 13 acres of landscaped gardens make it ideal for a family day out.
