Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
Birdsong cottage is an old stone house located in a small peaceful (early 16th century) village called Brusje, just 6km from Hvar Town. It is the ideal place to either join the sophisticated throng with all the bars and restaurants in Hvar Town or escape to the quiet of the village within a ten minute drive, where the breeze blows cool at night and you feel that you could almost touch the stars. The village is situated in the middle of lavender fields and the house has simply breathtaking seaviews across to the islands of Brac and Solta. For snorkelling, swimming and sunbathing, Brusje has several bays which are (as yet!) pretty much undiscovered by tourism - the closest one is 3 km away. The area is also very popular with cycling groups, walkers and those interested in nature. You can walk for hours in the hills behind the house and hardly see another living soul... A boat trip and a lavender experience in the village can be specially organised. In short Birdsong Cottage is the perfect place to escape from the world and totally recharge your batteries...NEWS FLASH - IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO CATCH A SEA PLANE FROM SPLIT AIRPORT WHICH TAKES ONLY 13 MINUTES TO HVAR ISLAND

Birdsong Cottage is themed in a way which reflects the colours of the surrounding countryside and the amazing sea views. Refurbished recently, it encompasses a large well equipped kitchen/ breakfast room on the ground floor with a double sofa bed. This room has glass and ornamental iron doors which open to the outside. There is also an additional relaxed living space with a very large sofa bed on the first floor with stunning sea views across the village over to the islands of Brac and Solta. Also on the first floor is a blue mosaic shower room. The terrace is situated at the back of the house, off the living room. Steep stairs lead to the 2 attic bedrooms, one double and a single - the double room has amazing panoramic seaviews and the single room has a pretty green view across to the large almond tree.
|Further details outdoors|
To the rear of the cottage is a terrace which is a lovely place to sit/ have coffee/ a glass of wine and generally unwind - it is sunny in the morning and has the benefit of the natural shade of the almond tree in the afternoons.
We have included a guide book at the house, which gives details of the places which we have discovered over the years that you would not normally come across. A fantastic restaurant in the middle of an abandoned village, a beach where the water is pure turquoise and you can see the bottom from metres above,...
The cottage has held a rental licence since 2012 and all appropriate insurances. Hazel the owner is a member of the British croatian chamber of commerce.
About this location
The Dalmatia region
Central Dalmatia is a charmed Mediterranean - a place of crystal clear waters, countless islands, Greek and Venetian architecture. The region is renowned for its 2,800 hours of sunshine each year
Places of interest on the journey to Hvar Island are Split, which was built around the Diocletian Palace (UNESCO heritage site), where the Roman walls, squares and temples are stilll clearly visible. Peristill Square inside the palace walls is a lovely place to sit and people watch over a cold beer or coffee. The historic town of Trogir, which is close to the airport is also a UNESCO heritage site and well worth a wander around the narrow streets.
Hvar was voted no 5 top destination for Summer 2012 by Lonely Planet. Hvar town is THE place to be on the island - a magical place - an undiscovered Mediterranean with Venetian architecture and ancient white stone squares, stained pink as the sun sets - it is virtually unchanged by the march of time. There is a lot to do and see there, places of cultural interest to visit include open air classical music concerts performed in the cloisters of the Franciscan monastery, stunning restaurants and bars, boat trips, amazing sea views from the old Spanish fort and plenty of nightlife. There is a very upbeat vibe in the Summer as expensive yachts moor up along the quay and the beautiful people arrive. Don't be surprised if you spot a famous face - Prince Harry was seen diving fully clothed into a swimming pool at a large open air night club and Tom Cruise was out and about here last year...
In the hills, just 6 km from Hvar Town is the village of Brusje- an early 16th century old stone shepherds village (less than a 10 minute drive). You arrive at another world, where you are just as likely to bump into a large white goat as you are a local! It is very peaceful and surrounded by nature with wild herbs growing in abundance. The position of the village enjoys amazing panoramic sea views. Brusje also has its own unspoilt beaches, just 3 km away - a lovely walk if you are keen walkers (up hill on the way back!!) or just a few minutes by car or moped. There are clearly marked cycle routes and the area is very popular for cycle holidays.

"Gorgeous house, beautiful island"
If I'm honest, I booked this house on the strength of its turquoise shutters. Not the best reason I know but the picture had me hooked. I also wanted to visit Hvar, the tiny island that claims to be the prettiest, sunniest and most glamorous in Croatia. I'm so glad we went for the shutters. The house is lovely, just large enough for the six of us although it was quite cosy. It is really well equipped, clean, modern and comfortable and the neighbours were charming and helpful. It's ideally placed about a 10 minute drive away from Hvar Town, which although glamorous was overpriced, overcrowded and full of posing yacht types. Better to hire a car and explore the coast for beautiful bays. We braved horrendous roads but were rewarded with deserted stone beaches and crystal clear waters. Would definitely recommend Birdsong Cottage. If you're not bothered about being slap bang in the middle of the party town it's an ideal base for discovering the rest of the island.

"A peaceful and idyllic retreat"
Birdsong Cottage was just what the doctor ordered after a few months of real hard labour at work! It was really refreshing to visit a place of such natural beauty that has remained still relatively untouched. Hazel, the owner, was incredibly helpful with everything from how the ferry/catamaran system worked to tasty local restaurants and secret beaches! If you want to know more you'll have to book Birdsong as I'm not prepared to make this particular beach public knowledge...I still want it to be as beautiful when I go back! I should also say that Hazel was very generous in letting us borrow her own snorkelling gear. We had intended to buy our own but if you venture past the touristy beaches it's surprisingly difficult to get your hands on a snorkel! If you go to Hvar you MUST go snorkelling, even if you're not usually into that kind of thing. The water is so beautifully clear; quite unlike anything I've seen before, so you won't be caught out by any nasties lurking beneath any seaweed! One would recommend sea shoes though as the beaches are pebbly and you do get sea urchins-very easy to spot though so if you were to tread on one in sea shoes it wouldn't hurt...but if you weren't wearing shoes you'd probably know about it! Hvar town is beautiful at night and we would definitely recommend walking up to the old fort-the view is amazing! The walk back through the town is buzzing at night with lots of bustling restaurants, bars and late night shopping! Nice shops though, no tat here! I would recommend Hvar to any couple or small group of friends. It's a very romantic spot if that's what you're into, but I'd be equally happy sharing the place with a few girlfriends. Birdsong was great for doing your own thing and exploring a little off the beaten track whilst still being within easy reach of the harbour town, but take it from me that you will want to hire a car. Only rent a bike if you are super fit and to be honest, hardcore!
