Home description
Los Rubiales is situated just off the beaten track and is the ideal venue for walkers, bird watchers, animal lovers (we have cats, dogs and horses), sun seekers and those wishing to enjoy some peace and quiet. Your hosts, Melanie and Barry live in the adjacent farmhouse and are on hand for local information (or not if you prefer to be left alone).
With just a 10 minute drive to the town of Huercal Overa means that our guests can choose to chill-out on site or take advantage of the restaurants, bars, theatre and shopping facilities in town.

The Costa de Almeria region
The immediate vacinity of Los Rubiales has in recent years benefitted from agricultural developement. Improved water supplies have transformed the area from semi desert into a lush growing region. Oranges and lettuce are the main crops but plenty of almond and olive groves also dot the hilly countryside.
We are 25 mins picturesque drive from the nearest sandy beaches at the golfing resort of San Juan de los Terreros. The province of Almeria is renowned for it's sunshine and July and August can be extremely hot and dry. Mid winter days typically begin with a crisp frost followed by a warm sun in a cloudless blue sky. When it rains..... it hammers down!
Huercal-Overa / El Saltador area
Los Rubiales is a short 10 minute drive from Huercal Overa; a tradition Spanish town benefiting from recent development resulting in a good choice of shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. The town boasts a brand new theatre and the leafy plazas in the old town area make a welcome shady place to sit and rest. There is also a large hospital. On Monday mornings the town is buzzing with shoppers at the two street markets where you can buy anything from a traditional rug to a kilo of olives.
Easter week sees the colourful Santa Semana celebrations culminating in each of the three brothrhoods stageing a spectacular procession through the streets.
Huercal Overa's annual fiesta is a five day event held in mid October. The tiny town of San Francisco (just 3kms away) has their fiesta on the first weekend in September. San Fransisco has a 'corner shop', two bars, a bakery and a petrol station.
Los Rubiales is situated on a country lane just off the tarmac road. This means that directly from our doorstep lies ideal terrain for walking and bird watching; common garden visitors include hoopoe and small owls. A recently opened state of the art equestrian centre is just 5kms away. With 100 stables and several arenas they offer lessons in riding and carriage driving or trekking in the countryside. Their attractive restaurant caters for riders and the general public alike.
For those willing to travel a little further, the city of Lorca is 40 minutes drive away and a two hour drive will take you to Granada.
How to get there
Los Rubiales is situated mid distance between Almeria and Murcia (San Javier) airports. Alicante airport is further but still only 1hour 40 mins away. The budget airlines fly to all these airpots from various locations in the UK. Try Ryan Air, Monarch Airways, Easy Jet or Thompson Fly. As we are situated just off the beaten track a car is essential. Many car hire companies operate from the above airports and a vehicle can easily be booked at the same time as your flight.

Further details indoors: The accommodation is in a tastefully converted single storey barn building. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathroom is very spacious with a walk in shower. The interior is spotlessly clean and in good repair. The natural pine furniture perfectly compliments the rustic farmhouse setting.
Further details outdoors: Your apartment is situated, alogside two others, in a pretty walled courtyard with alfresco dining facilities and a large brick Bar B Que. A verandah, with climbing plants provides shaded seating or choose the chunky log table and benches in full sunshine. An archway in the wall takes you through to the paved pool terrace. The pool is 8.5 x 4m and shallow at one end. There are ample sun loungers with comfortable matresses. Optional shade is provided by a rush parasol, large plants and a shaded corner seat. The pool terrace overlooks the surrounding coutryside.

We do not charge for empty beds in your apartment. Guests wishing to book for more or less than a 'round week' are charged per night pro rata.
Our prices include; all bed linen, bathroom and kitchen towels, apartment cleaning and a welcome basket of basic groceries on arrival.
Beach / pool towels are available to hire.
Gas for a mobile fire is available at a small extra cost for winter guests.
Conditions
We do not impose check out times on our guests; there is no sitting by the pool with your cases stacked around you here!
We do not have change over days either; you can book to arrive and leave when it suits YOU.
Whilst children are very welcome here, (and always have a fabulous time) we wish to point out that we do not have facilities specifically aimed at keeping children amused. Our friends at Casa Ana (property number 19958) also in this area, offer a venue more geared towards youngsters.
