The Costa de Almeria region
Adalucia is one of the sunniest regions in Europe offering sun drenched beachers, golf course, marinas and much much more. However somtimes visitors allude to the extraodinary diversity of this area, its history and culture which is witnessed by venturing into its beautiful countryside. Andalucia is at a juction of land and sea routes and as such has always been open to invation and colonisation.
It has the oldest remains in Europe of the prehistoric period dating back 2million years. Cave houses (still a traditional habitat in some areas) have given up therer treasures of fine cave paintings depicting the way of life through this period and some others dating back to 4000 BC.
The Iberians and the Teressions established there kingdom of Tartessus during the first millenium, They were followed by the Phoenicians and Carthagians who were traders. In the expantion of the Roman empire they were again colonised. The romans brought Christianity, developed the mines (gold, silver and copper) and grew a variety of agricultural products (this area now provides most of the UK's fruite and vegatables). What is now called Andalucia became one of the wealthiest parts of the roman empire.
By the eighth century and after internal unrest the way was opened up to the Moorish invation from the straits of North Africa and within a decade the invaders had conquered most of the peninsular which then became part of the Muslim Empire.
Eight centuries passed and the area continued to develop, Cordoba grew to be one of the largest, wealthiest and most cultural cities in the western world. However the re-conquest by the christians although gradual culminated in 1492 in the fall of Granada (This coincided with the first voyage of Christopher Columbas to the New World).
The 19th and 20th centuris found Spain and particular Adalucia in the doldrums. History speaks of Spain loosing its possesions in the conflicts between France and Netherlands.
This century saw the revival of Spain, when joining the EU and Nato which followed a rapid economic growth and in this area, tourism and agriculture.
Much to explore!!
Huercal-Overa / Taberno area
Taberno is a traditional Spanish whitewashed town nestling in the hills at the foot of the Sierra de la Estancias (mountain range) with the Seirra Nevada in view cascading down to the coastline (ancient Turkish port). It is overlooked by its church from which the narrow streets cascade down the hill side, passing a number of old cave houses and whitewashed terraces behind doors that open into this rich cultural rural community.
Life here moves at a slower pace, the goat herder with his flock is still seen wandering through the streets and across the local countryside riding his donkey, his dog keeping his world in check. Old ladies dressed in black are also evident going about there daily business, pruning olive and other fruit trees, just as they have for hundreds of years off the land.
Taberno boasts a small number of bars and restauarants traditionally frequented by the elders of the village, just watching the world go by. One restaurant doubles up as the towns community centre where it seems the whole village descends upon at 11-00pm at night until the early hours, most weekends. However from 7-00pm the restaurants cater for those who enjoy good food, Spanish cuisine and tapas (the traditional snack). Fresh bread is baked on the premises and most grilled food, steaks and fish are cooked again the traditional way over a huge open fire.
The surrounding area is mostly farmland, unchanged for generations, small family farms(Corticas) whose olive, almond, orange and lemon trees occupy the landscape as far as the eye can see. This clearly provides the main source of income as it has for hundreds of years, along with the traditional Goat herders and interspersed Pig farms, however change is moving in which is evident by the villas popping up in this dramatic landscape.
The landscape is to me more than dramatic, rolling hills and mountain ranges the morning sunrise and evening sunsets provide a Kaleidoscope of colour and contrasting shadows and the night sky a galaxy of twinkling stars making up the Milky way overhead.
The village as all Andalucian towns and villages love their fiestas . Extended weekends marking agricultural and religous events are a feature for street parties and enjoyed by all with an intensity.
