Northern England region
Slaithwaite Village The TV series Where The Heart Is was filmed here and about. There are also a number of very nice cafes and ice cream parlours, not to mention The Little Bridge, which is a fantastic wine bar serving lovely food.
Holmfirth is of course “Last of the Summer Wine” country where much of the series was filmed. However some of the scenes in the programme were actually filmed at Cop Hill and also inside the Rose and Crown! Also in Holmfirth are some beautiful shops to browse and very good restaurants and wine bars.
BRASS BANDS! Yorkshire the heart of the Brass Band. At Whitesuntide in Oldham and Saddleworth, Brass Band Contests are held in the vilages of Delph, Denshaw and Dobcross, a 20 minute drive from The Piggery.
JAZZ! JAZZ! AND MORE JAZZ! Here in Marsden, literally just down the road, The Jazz Festival, every year in October, many Jazz artists and bands attend the Festival for a whole weekend and strut their stuff in the local pubs and other venues in and around Marsden village. Fantastic!
Marsden – Home of Huddersfield Poet Mr. Simon Armitage
Laurence Batley Theatre Huddersfield Town Centre
Grand Theatre, Leeds – home of Opera North and Northern Ballet
The Titanic Spa Linthwaite (just 10 minutes drive) for instant relaxation and pampering
Emmerdale Village near Leeds
Colne Valley Museum in Golcar is well worth a visit – a stones throw away
Yorkshire Sculpture Park at Bretton approximately 12 miles away – currently hosting 'Skyscraping', by Pettican, Lewis and Mojsiewisc, as well as permanent work by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore,James Turrell and Andy Goldsworthy.
Nostell Priory with its unique collection of Chippendale furniture.
Hebden Bridge described as “alternative and funky” is a wonderful place to visit and takes approximately 40 minutes to get there. You can take a gentle walk along the canal watching the world go by or perhaps take a boat trip.
The Hebden Bridge Little Theatre was formed in 1924 and has been producing plays almost continuously ever since.
Huddersfield has many architecturally interesting buildings and is of course home to the Huddersfield Choral Society and internationally renowned Contemporary Music Festival.
Cop Hill itself is located high above the Colne Valley and overlooks the villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden. Slaithwaite was part of the Earl of Dartmouth estates, a Chapelry, in the parishes of Huddersfield and Almondbury and included the Township of Slaithwaite.
Slaithwaite Hall or “Slawit Hall” as it is known locally, is just along the road from The Piggery and is thought to date from the mid 15th century. It is one of a number of cruck framed buildings clustered in this area of West Yorkshire.
In Slaithwaite village, legend has it that local smugglers caught by the excise men tried to explain their nocturnal activities as “raking the moon from the canal” (and definitely not as “fishing out smugglers brandy”). So now, a Moonraker is the official nickname for a native of the village. The Moonraking Festival takes place at half term during every second February (next one Feb 2015). Similar stories and nicknames exist for the neighbouring villages of Golcar (Lillies), Marsden (Cuckoos) and Linthwaite (Leadboilers).
Slaithwaite is the only village in England where the newly restored canal runs alongside it's main street which is now host to coffee parlours and cafes, The Green Valley Grocer Co-operative sells local produce and fine speciality artisan breads and Merrydale Butchers is famous for its award winning sausages and meat pies.
Courses in bread making can be taken nearby and other courses including permaculture, scything, fruit tree grafting, willow weaving basketry are all available from www.edibles.org.uk just a few minutes down the road.
There are many interesting walks nearby. Here are just a few:
Merrydale to Slaithwaite – Along the road from the Piggery to the Rose and Crown, you can embark upon the Merrydale Walk which follows the stream down the valley through woodland and picturesque scenery into Slaithwaite village where you can enjoy an ice-cream at the Vanilla Bean or a refreshing drink at the The Little Bridge Wine Bar.
The Pennine Way Cupwith Reservoir – This walk takes you over the moor to either Cupwith Reservoir and onto Buckstones or by turning left just before the reservoir you will find yourself on the long path down into Marsden. Call at the Railway or the Riverhead for a much earned drink!
The Pennine Way Buckstones Walk – Drive up to Buckstones on the A640 (10 minutes drive), leave the car behind and walk down the moorside to the reservoir and down to Eastergate Bridge, an ancient monument that helped carry packhorses up and over the Pennines to market, and listen for the calls of the Curlew, the Golden Plover and the Skylark. Then onto Tunnel End where the Standedge Tunnel begins and the Visitor Centre offers interest and a well deserved rest. Be prepared, it's a good walk back along the canal and up the hill to The Piggery!
(We can always make arrangements to drive you up to collect your car later!)
