The Central Thailand / Bangkok / Prachuab Khiri Khan region
The area around the nation's capital, Bangkok, has an abundance of attractions for the visitor to Thailand. Central Thailand is a fertile basin where the main activity is rice farming and the area is regarded as the rice bowl of our country. Besides being the kingdom's most fertile land for rice growing, the Central region is also famous for its tourist attractions which focus on natural resources and ancient historic remains. Trips to thick forests, high waterfalls, caves and beaches are easily combined with visits to ancient ruined temples or palaces and historical places. Thailand is often called the "land of smiles", and rightly so because you will see more smiling people here than anywhere else in the world.
Hua Hin area
A glorious sandy beach stretching 3km south is a short took took ride away (approx £1 ). Bar/beach hut facilities are available there. Water sports/horse riding are also available. Hua Hin is a very popular beach resort with many varied shopping and restaurant facilites. The night markets with the inevitable bartering are a really popular feature. There is an abundancve of golf courses around Hua Hin catering for all abilities. An excellent driving range is situated close to the villa. Elephant Village is a short walk from the villa. Elephant rides are available here. ATM machines are plentiful in Hua Hin and facilities for cashing travellers cheques are readily available. Many food markets are to be found with a wide and interesting variety of fruit and vegetables. A modern shopping village which includes a large Tesco Lotus is now open. The residence of the Thai Royal Family, Hua Hin has been developed as a family resort and contains some excellent restaurants specialising in seafood as well as a variety of bars which contribute to a lively night life. The distance from the Villa to the city of Hua Hin (Night Market) is 3.8 kms or 2.35miles.
At the further end of Hua Hin is Monkey Mountain (12 km) where as the name implies there are hundreds of monkeys waiting to be fed. The views from here are quite spectacular. Sit right on the sea front and try Pupay and Nooar's (see photo's) Lungrat Khaimuk restaurant the otherside of Monkey Mountain on Ta Kiab beach excellent value and really good food.
How to get there
A variety of airlines fly ffrom London and regional airports either directly or indirectly to Bangkok. Flight time is around 12 hours direct; longer by indirect routes. Fares vary according to season. Check bargain fares with travel companies such as Airline Network, Travelbag or Dialaflight. The journey from Bangkok to Hua Hin takes approx. two and a half hours by taxi and costs around 2500 baht single trip. Air con buses run every 40 minutes from the Southern Bus Terminal (taxi or bus from the airport) . Fares are around 200baht. Trains take about 4-5 hours travelling through interesting countryside. There is an airport at Hua Hin with dalily flights form Bangkok. However, the flights are very expensive and there is little saving in terms of time. There are plenty of car hire companies including Avis and Hertz. The cheapest I have foundi is Fastcarhire uk if you are resident in uk. (www.Fastcarhire.co.uk) or www.auto-europe.co.uk if you want to drive from Bangkok airport.
