The Azores region
If you want to experience life in the country, Azorean style, this is the place to come! You may see horses, oxen and donkeys working as pack animals, plowing or pulling carts. During the local festivals ox-carts and even goat-carts are used to carry bread, wine and cheese in a decorative procession.
There are passenger ferries to Pico and Sao Jorge, allowing you to explore two more islands during your stay on Faial. Pico boasts the highest mountain in Portugal, a whaling museum, whaling factory, vineyards which feature on the UNESCO World Heritage sites list, the wine factory and fascinating lava tube caves. Sao Jorge is simply a beautiful, quiet island, ridged with volcanic craters and edged by cliffs sheltering pretty villages - the "fajas". The cheese factory is always a favourite visit on this island.
The Azores enjoy a mild maritime climate, of which the dominant feature is the area of high pressure named after them. The "Azores High" generally lies South or South West of the islands and, in the summer, is often stationary, when prolonged calm, hot, sunny weather can be expected. July and August are the hottest months and February and March the wettest. Temperatures rarely drop below 12C and are often up around 20C. The sea is warmed by the Gulf Stream to a pleasant 17-22C, making it very pleasant to swim in year round.
Explore the picturesque villages and the main town of Horta, with its marina full of colourful paintings left by visiting yachts. The famous "Peter's Cafe Sport" is the perfect place to stop for coffee or a cold drink, where sailors swap tales of adventure on the high seas.
Whale and dolphin watching trips have replaced the traditional whaling boats as a way to make a living from the sea. From the marina you can go whale watching, swimming with dolphins, sport fishing, line fishing, diving, snorkelling and sailing, or take a relaxing afternoon cruise along our scenic coastline.
From the main town of Horta and its modern marina you can go whale watching, swimming with dolphins, deep sea, coastal and sport fishing, sailing, diving and snorkelling with rays and sharks. You can take a jeep safari, or an exciting downhill cycle ride from the highest viewpoint. Take a walk around our spectacular "Caldeira", and visit the dramatic moonscape of the Capelinhos eruption site and lighthouse, which boasts an impressive underground interpretation centre.
Passenger ferries enable you to visit Pico, with it's World Heritage vineyards and whale watching museum or Sao Jorge, with it's breathtaking fajas, craft workshops and cheese factory, for the day, making Faial a perfect centre for your holiday.

Thank you for your review and helpful comments. All are completely fair and will be addressed before next season. I am deeply sorry that your stay was spoiled by the bathroom problem - if I could have offered alternative accommodation I would have done, but had nothing in the vicinity. I do hope you will take advantage of my offer to compensate you on your next stay. I promise - everything will be perfect!

"wow what a location and cozy cottage"
My wife and I stayed at Vista Mar last September and had a really nice stay. The cottage is so cute and cozy and what a location on a hill overlooking the sea. The village of Almoxarife is just down the hill and there some really delicious restaurants there and a couple of cute cafes to drink coffee or have a beer and watch the beautiful ocean. The seafood is fresh and Azorian cooking delicious. The beach is probably the best on Faial and quite popular on weekends. It is lovely, sand is darker like most in the Azores. We did have a few bad days of weather thanks to a hurricane brewing in the Azores, but that was unusual for what I was told.
The cottage is perfect for a couple. You can sit on the front porch and have evening cocktails and enjoy the amazing view. There is wireless throughout the village and you can sit at the playground and get your e-mails. The church has a wonderful bell that rings out each hr and half hr. It's a simple cottage but perfect for what we wanted and the price is a real value. We loved our stay and will be back for sure.
