It has the towers of Lincoln Cathedral, the history of the Castle, beautiful towns such as Stamford (renowned for Burghley House and the horse trials), the rolling Lincolnshire Wolds and the beaches of Skegness and Maplethorpe. Wildlife enthusiasts will love Donna Nook (for the annual birth of the seals) and Gilbraltar Point (for the birdlife). Horncastle is a town 135 miles north of London, on the banks of the Rivers Bain and Waring where they join. The town lies about 22 miles east of Lincoln and about ten miles northwest of Spilsby. The town itself is bounded on the north by West Ashby, to the west by Langton and Thimbleby and on the south by Thornton and Scrivelsby. The town is in a valley just west of The Lincolnshire Wolds.
Horncastle town is a Market Town with some light industries: drainage pipes, paper sacks, newspaper publication and printing and country clothing. It supports several local sports teams. Tourism is a major industry, especially the Antique trade. Many citizens commute daily to Lincoln, Boston, Louth and Skegness and to the RAF base at Coningsby.
Many years ago it used to be host to the largest horsefair in the country and a legacy of that is that Horncastle has a multitude of pubs and hotels providing an enormous range of restaurants and places on entertainment.
For those interested in golf the National Golf Centre at Woodhall Spa is 15 to the South.
Sotby is about 10 miles West of Horncastle and a tiny hamlet of about 15 houses and farms. Owl Cottage is 3/4 mile South West of Sotby and is surrounded by woods and fields of wheat, barley and other crops.
