The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region
The Peak District became Britain's first National Park back in 1951. The desire to protect the area stemmed from its unique location - surrounded as it is on all sides by the great industrial cities of the North and Midlands. It was soon recognised that its very proximity to these great cities rendered the area vulnerable and a strenuous public effort to safeguard its beauty ensued.
The Hope Valley / Hathersage area
Hathersage is one of the most interesting villages in the Peak District, boasting historical associations to Robin Hood and the Eyre family. The village centres on a road-junction above the River Derwent. Hathersage is a popular centre for walkers and rock-climbers; its east side is overlooked by moor-land and a line of grit-stone edges, of which Stanage Edge is the largest. There are also spectacular tors, such as Higgar Tor, and the enigmatic hill fort at Carl Wark, which has so far defied archaeologists' attempts to date it. Several of the edges were quarried and the area was a major source of millstones for grinding corn and metals. The modern village has a range of pubs, hotels and shops including banks, cycle hire shops and outdoor equipment suppliers. Behind the main street you can find the surprising luxury of an outdoor swimming pool. Nearby attractions include Bagshaw Cave, Carl Walk and Derwent Dams.

Guestbook for 2993 - Rokeby Cottage
Cottage character, decor, furnishings and location were better than expected!
Mr Connell, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
November 2011
,The cottage was really lovely and well appointed. It was also very well situated for walks and accessing the village. The kitchen was very well equipped and we enjoyed cooking and eating in there. It was warm and cosy. We didn't get to enjoy the garden but if returning in warmer weather it would have been lovely to eat out there. We hope to return.

Mr Green, Ipswich, Suffolk

,The cottage was amazing. The best I've ever stayed in. The owners had obviously put a lot of care and attention into every aspect of the decor, cleanliness, fixtures and fittings. The location was also fantastic, great views and easy access to lots of walks, attractions, towns and shops etc.
