"Magical - full of history with modern comforts."

This is a truly wonderful find - close to Axminster; hidden away in what feels like a secret valley. The weather was a bit Shakespearian but the cottage more than compensated - warm, cosy, thick walls… More

"Peaceful and calm place that we were reluctant to leave"

We viewed the cottage online and were not disappointed wen we arrived. The cottage is very private and it is one of the few places i was happy to let the children play outside without worrying about the road.

"Cosy old cottage with a few drawbacks"

The cottage itself is historic and very quaint. Be aware that, due to the age and style of the house, floorboards are creaky and lack soundproofing and it can be very dark inside. There was a strong scent of dog in the living areas; this is understandable as it is a dog-friendly rental but worth noting if you have an aversion to the smell or pet hair. The two single beds are rather short and more suited to children than adults. A friendly and helpful retired couple live in an annexe of the cottage. This wasn't clear when we booked. The grounds are extensive and beautifully tended, a real treat for gardening fans. A stream runs right through the garden and there are a couple of ponds which add to the serenity but unfortunately not if you have little children. We had to supervise our 2.5 year old very closely as there were steep concealed drops into the stream which were potentially dangerous. The presence of a car garage (with pit) and an open staircase were other hazards. The cottage advertises itself as child friendly but we would advise caution with the very young.

The Old Cider Lodge is nearly 800 years old and does have a few creaky floor boards and is not as light as modern properties. There are open ponds and a stream which run through the property which are a hazard to young children - this is made clear in the description of the property. We welcolme children but have not described the property as "child friendly". The cottage is thoroughly cleaned between bookings to a proffessional standard which takes 4 - 6 hours to do.
