Most of a very fine, Grade II listed, 17th cent. manor house (some parts older) on a medieval and Domesday site. It is set in 500 acres of farmland, mainly dairy and arable (you are welcome to watch the milking); the friendly farming owners live in the wing. Extensively refurbished, the manor house is a marvellous place for family gatherings of all kinds: huge amounts of space, the biggest games room we have seen, original features of the house retained - fine beams, granite fireplaces.

Beside the forecourt are 1' acres of enclosed children's play garden, mainly mown grass with excellent wooden equipment (climbing frame, sandpit, swing, slide) and a sunken trampoline. The garden stretches around the back of the house to terracing where steps lead down to a huge gravelled courtyard (also enclosed) with tables/chairs. Also, a fabulous sheltered patio area with table/chairs, barbecue and two six-seater hot tubs (available all year), and sauna.Inside, the house is smart, well decorated, light. Entrance hall, off which is a comfy, beamed living room with big fireplace (woodburner); beamed dining room with ancient (c1591) sunken granite fireplace (open fire), table seating 16 (fine, high-backed, upholstered chairs); well-equipped, newly fitted Shaker-style kitchen with flagstoned floor, two dishwashers, microwave, American fridge-freezer, electric range-style cooker with gas hob, and door to courtyard. From the kitchen, step up to breakfast table for 4, leading to games room (60' x 40') with maple floor, four four-seater sofas round a coffee table next to a proper bar which you are welcome to stock and enjoy, 50" TV, a full-sized snooker table, table tennis, pool table, skittles, children's tricycles, ride-on cars, door to garden. Shower, downstairs loos and utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, sink).

From the games room, stairs lead to a big family bedroom with 5' double plus two singles, sofa, TV; bathroom (bath plus hand-shower, separate shower, basin) and separate loo.

Fine, formal, wide oak stairs lead from the hall up to five more bedrooms:

Facing the front, a family room with 5' double and two singles and en suite shower-room (suite).

A large double (facing the courtyard) with antique 5' French bed, antique furniture and 2 steps up to wood-floored en suite bathroom (suite, bath in the centre of the room, plus hand-shower).

A twin or zip-linked 6' double with en suite bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). Interconnecting door (lockable) between the twin rooms.

The master bedroom: a quite marvellous room with fine, exposed, barrel vaulted roof, polished ancient oak floor, 5' antique four-poster bed with beautiful drapes and en suite bathroom (suite with roll-top bath in the centre of the room, plus hand-shower). There is also, for all, a large family bathroom (suite plus hand-shower and separate shower). 3 TVs/2 DVDs. Professional catering available. A good place: much appreciated and enjoyed. The West Country region

East Devon: that is Devon east of the river Exe and Exeter - Devon's capital with superb cathedral and much else attractive. Here is the most smiling of lush farmland and most dramatically hilly, the easiest to see from a car because the lanes are less narrow, the hedges less high. Domed hills rise abruptly and steeply, baize-green fields to crowns of woods or sentinel beech trees, half-way up farmsteads like a children's-book idyll. Woodbury Common is a small high moor with heather and Scots pine trees and fine newish golf course.

Exmouth is a resort with lots of sandy beach and boats. The Exe estuary is full of yachts and has one of Devon's prettiest villages, Lympstone, beside it. A shore of mainly pebbles keeps the area comparatively quiet, though the coast is attractive with white and red cliffs, pleasant, civilised towns like Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton and villages like Beer and Branscombe. Its inland villages tend to be pretty: Broadhembury is special - and the view from Hembury Hill (fort) is sensational. Hardly anyone seems to visit the lovely Blackdown Hills - big beech woods, smart fields with thoroughbred horses - on its northern border. You can have flying lessons at Dunkeswell aerodrome and there is an excellent (flat) cycle track, punctuated by pubs, from Exeter beside the Exe estuary to the sea. The whole east Devon coast is called a 'World Heritage Coastline'.

Honiton

Widworthy: hamlet amid beautiful hills and valleys 4 miles east of Honiton; 8 miles to the sea at Beer, Branscombe and Sidmouth; about 12 to Lyme Regis and the fossil cliffs. Golf, 3 miles. Leisure centre in Honiton. Clay pigeon shooting locally by arrangement.
