The Normandy / Calvados region
Normandy, in the North of France is a region steeped in history, from the times of William the Conqueror to the battle grounds of World War Two. Normandy has so much to offer, such beautiful countryside, an abundance of pretty fishing towns and miles of sandy beaches. A rich gastronomic area, renowned for the Camembert and Pont l’Eveque cheeses, cider and Calvados liqueur.
Deauville - marina town with two world-famous racecourses, a casino and Pompeian baths. Honfleur with its picturesque harbour has long been a favourite haunt of artists and tourists alike. Drive over the enormous Pont de Normandie to reach Le Havre and Ste Adresse – with its sandy beach and watersports.
Caen is a good base to explore the D-Day Landing Beaches. Fashionable resorts include Deauville and Trouville.
Honfleur / Fiquefleur area
The Old Dock surrounded by picturesque narrow houses, the Lieutenancy and St Stephen's Church - this is with no doubt what catches the eye of every visitor upon their first visit to Honfleur.
The Dock itself was built thanks to Colbert in 1681 so as to take over from the old harbour that had become far too small for the increasing needs of the town. - (Colbert was Louis the 14th's finance minister) - To carry out this work, Colbert had to have the Western part of the rampart demolished.
The narrow houses squeezed against one another on St Catherine's quay are quite unusual.
They are not only all different in size and shape. They also have two ground floors, one that opens onto the quay and another one about half way up that opens behind onto the Dauphin Street or the Logettes Street. Because - or thanks to - this disposition, each house is privately owned by two different householders. These houses were built between the 16th and the 18th centuries. Some of them have overhanging storeys and many have their walls protected by slates.
The river Seine has always inspired poets and painters. Set by the Estuary, Honfleur not only gave birth to seamen but also to many artists in the 19th century : painters, writers or musicians.
Attracted by the special quality of the light by the estuary, painters start coming to Honfleur in the 18th century. But it's really at the beginning of the 19th century, between 1810 and 1820, that they come to Honfleur and discover the romantic setting of the medieval town of Honfleur, thus following the steps of talented English watercolourists and landscape painters.
That's the period when painters discover the ever-changing effects of weather on the landscape. These discoverers are called Bonington, Turner, Paul Huet, Xavier Leprince, Camille Corot, Eugène Isabey…. This generation will mould the others. The Barbizon painters - C Troyon, L François, C. Daubigny - put their easels up at the Saint Siméon inn and on the shores of Villerville. The elder ones help the younger ones - Eugène Boudin, Alexandre Dubourg, JB Jongkind - who in turn advise the new young generation of painters - Claude Monet, F. Bazille.
This is a long story, made of encounters, friendship and advice, without any school or dogma. In the 1860s, Eugene Boudin was the federative element between the younger artists and their elders.
Other movements will ensue: the Nabis (Vuillard, Valloton), then the Fauve (Dufy, Friez, Saint-Delis). Later on, painters will come to Honfleur from the North or the East of France, such as Herbo, Gernez or Driès. Spanish painters will also find their inspiration in Honfleur (Lagar or Grau-Sala). And Honfleur will be a new home to the Polish refugee Kosmowski.
Thanks to their talent and their sensitivity, these artists have all contributed to the history of countryside painting and have enhanced the age-old image of Honfleur.
