The Normandy / Calvados region

The Normandy region of France combines a 360-mile dramatic coastline, including the dramatically evocative World War II landing beaches, with a verdant interior of lush farmland, bustling market towns, and historic landmarks such as the cities of Caen, Bayeux and Rouen. Gastronomic delights abound, from fine cheeses to cider and Calvados.

The department of Calvados is famed for its pastoral land producing products such as butter, cheese, and cider and of course the intoxicating apple brandy known as Calvados!

There are some elegant coastal resorts off the Cote Fleurie especially Deauville and Trouville, adjacent towns both well known for their beautiful sandy beaches and much favoured by the rich and famous of France.

Further along the coast you'll come to the D Day beaches where Allied troops landed in 1944. The capital is Caen worth visiting for its two 11th century abbeys built by William the Conqueror and Bayeux famous for it's ancient tapestry.

Inland you can discover the Pays d'Auge area with its wooded valleys, fields, cider orchards & half-timbered houses as seen in the charming and beautiful village of Beuvron-en-Auge, near Lisieux.

Honfleur area

One of the most picturesque old fishing ports in France and beloved by tourists from all over the world. Yet despite its fame and popularity, Honfleur retains its timeless character. In the harbour, you can still buy your fish direct from the men who catch them.

Honfleur lies on the estuary of the River Seine. Writers and artists have for long been attracted by Honfleur. Its light and ambience made it a favourite with Corot, Boudin and many other Impressionist painters. The plethora of plaques spread all over the town attest to its long association with notable people.

There are many interesting things to see in Honfleur. The centre of attraction is usually the Vieux Bassin (Old Port) with its boats, quays and signature buildings: the tall, narrow, slate-fronted waterside houses. Not far from the old port is the church of St. Catherine built by local ships' carpenters entirely from wood (except for the foundations) to celebrate the departure of the English after the Hundred Years War. The church stands apart from its massive oak belfry, which is now a part of the Eugène Boudin museum. This museum contains many artefacts which relate to everyday life in Normandy in the 18th and 19th-centuries. There are also extensive collections of paintings by artists who worked in the region, and a large number by Eugène Boudin, who was born in Honfleur in 1824 (actually in our cottage).

Honfleur has no shortage of restaurants, many of which surround and overlook the old port, and from April to early October most of them have tables situated outside under large canopies close to the water's edge, where you can enjoy the luxury yachts coming and going.

Further details indoors:
The recently installed fitted kitchen incorporates an electric oven, ceramic hob, fridge, washing machine, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee machine and plenty of matching crockery, cutlery and glasses. The cottage has full central heating and equipped with TV, DVD player and Radio/Cassette/CD Player.

The cottage has a steepish spiral staircase and may not be suitable for the elderly, infirm or persons with restricted mobility. The two bedrooms are on the first floor with one room accessed from the other. Although there are sufficient beds for six people (by using the convertible sofa in the living room) plus two further single beds in the main bedroom, the cottage is not large and would ideally be suited for up to four adults plus two children.

Blankets and pillows together with mattress and pillow protectors are included in the rental. Bed linen (sheets, pillow cases and towels) are not included, but can be hired at very reasonable rates from our local agents in Honfleur and we would be pleased to book them for you if you are not able to bring your own. Non-smoking preferred. The property is unsuitable for the elderly, infirm, wheelchairs or those with restricted mobility.

Further details outdoors:
There is street parking almost opposite the cottage and also just round the corner in the adjacent side road, where it's normally quite easy to park. Our area is residential so you don't get many tourists trying to park there and the road is invariably very calm and quiet. There's no restriction on parking time and no parking fees near the cottage, unlike the very centre of Honfleur, where you have to pay to park and also restricted to 2 hours maximum. Our cottage is only a very short walk of about 4 - 5 minutes from the old port in the centre of Honfleur, so it's actually easier to leave your car near the cottage and walk rather than search for a space and worry about the time.

Unfortunately we do not have our own garden. The cottage is entered through a side shared courtyard, which is for access only. With consideration for our adjacent neighbours, it cannot be used for sitting out or barbecues.

Conditions

SECURITY DEPOSIT:
Upon arrival and before handing over the keys to the cottage, our local agents will require a Security Deposit cheque for £170 (pounds) plus a Cleaning Deposit of 40 € (euros) in cash. The security deposit cheque will be held without banking and posted back to you within 2 weeks of the end of your holiday providing there are no breakages nor damage to the property or its contents. The cleaning deposit will be refunded on your day of departure providing the cottage is left perfectly clean and tidy for the following clients.

CHILDREN AND PERSONS UNDER 25 YEARS OLD:
There must be at least two adults over 25 years old within the party, unless by special agreement.

Guestbook

Just a quick note to say how much my parents enjoyed staying at the cottage. We're feeling rather nostalgic about our trip last year and wishing that it could be an annual event. Honfleur was one of the nicest towns that we stayed in, in all France. Don't be surprised to hear from us again as we would love to spend another week in Honfleur in the future. Thank you for your hospitality and the loan of the DVDs. KIM & MARK (Canada) ___________________________________________________________________________________________
I just wanted to say thank you. We had a simply splendid holiday and the cottage contributed by delivering everything we wanted. I'd be happy to recommend your place. The holiday was a great success. KATHY ___________________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you very much for an enjoyable and comfortable stay in Honfleur. We had a very relaxing week and look forward to our next trip to France. STEPHANIE

I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our visit! Our entire trip was wonderful (we experienced much more serendipity than any set of travellers has any right to expect), and staying at your cottage added so much to our overall experience. Thank you for working with us. All the arrangements went smoothly, your agents were helpful and accommodating, and your neighbour is indeed charming. Thanks again for an amazing experience that we will all remember fondly. All things considered, we'd rather be in Honfleur !! KATHLEEN & ALAN (Beverley Hills, USA)
