The Stables -Puddleduck Valley
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
The original stone barn used for stabling horses, the Stables is our newly converted plush holiday cottage. With a private enclosed garden, overhanging Ash trees and private parking 20 metres from the cottage, the Stables is a dream stay holiday let.
The Stables consists of a lounge / dining room, a fully fitted and equipped kitchen, a small children's room with triple bunk beds, a double room with king size bed and bathroom. Additional children's beds are available on request.
Snuggle up in the lounge or take a stroll in the wooded valley by the ponds with the children. The Stables also has a BBQ area in the garden with picnic bench and seating for the whole family.

The West Country region
Activities available on site:
We have a large fully stocked trout pond on site where guests can use traditional or fly rods. We just ask that guests pay for what they catch.
With open fields, heavily wooded slopes, large ponds and the stream running past the site we have a wide range of habitats for birds. Try and spot some while exploring or hole up to see the more elusive species. Free activity.
Nature Trails - Coming Soon
Explore the grounds on our nature trails. Discover trees you've never noticed before, butterflies, and mini beasts you've never even heard of. Free activity.
Mini Beasts & Microscopes
Discover the mini beasts that live in the undergrowth and under the logs and stones. In this session we collect up the wee beasties and then use microscopes to take a closer look. Did you know that worms do actually have a head end? Chargeable activity.
Twice a day we collect the eggs from our flock of chickens. Ever felt how warm an egg is when you take it from under a chicken? You'll be surprised! Free activity.
An activity everybody enjoys. Join us in decorating the trees with grotesque clay faces made from ground clay dug on site. Take a picture quickly as they get washed off after about a week in the rain. Chargeable activity.
We have a beautiful little rowing boat on the pond we leave for the wildlife (no introduced fish). We have a number of different size life jackets too just in case although the pond is only 4 feet deep. We do ask that all children are supervised by an adult at all times. Free Activity - Deposit required for life jackets.
Although our ponds are originally man made in the '80s the wildlife has really moved in. Dip your net and see all the invertebrates that make the pond home. We empty our nets into shallow plastic trays with water in so that we can view the beasties up close and see what's what. Free activity.
Dressing Up Box
For Toddlers and Eddie Izzard alike, our dressing up box is sure to entertain. What will you be today? A princess? A farmer? How about a fairy? All garments are cleaned on a regular basis. Free activity.
Meet the animals
A family holiday at Puddleduck Valley isn't complete without spending some time petting the animals here. You are sure to meet the our friendly moggies but we also have a rabbit, guinea pig, dogs and of course the goats and kids who always entertain. Free Activity.
Our own children don't allow us to host their own birthday parties without including a treasure hunt. Designed for specific age groups, the treasure hunts are non chargeable. Just put the clues back please!
Feed the fish - Coming Soon
We set aside one of our smaller ponds for some of our smaller and tamer fish. We don't allow fishing in this pond so that the fish become more tame and guests can feed the fish with fish food pellets. A small charge is made for the fish food.
On the odd occasion we use one of our barns as a catapult range using soft clay as balls. Closely supervised, this activity is arranged on an ad hoc basis and a firm favourite with the boys, tom-boys, and Bart Simpson wannabes. Please note that anyone who fails to obey the instructor will be asked to leave the range immediately.
Join Melanie for an hour or two of puppet making with the bonus of taking your creations home to wow your friends and family. A firm favourite on rainy days. Chargeable activity.
We are currently in the process of building a circular cycle track around the ponds and back through the woods. Suitable for all ages (younger guests require supervision). Free activity. Watch our blog for progress.
Hatching Hut - Coming Soon
Our hatching hut is where we hatch and rear our chicks and ducklings. If you're patient you may be lucky enough to see a chick hatching. You may be surprised to learn that a chick often takes more than 4 hours to hatch. Free Activity
Sausages & Marshmallows
Camping (even posh camping) isn't really camping until you cook a sausage on a stick over a camp fire followed up with a gooey roasted marsh mallow. In the late evenings of summer we often start up a camp fire and supply the sausages and marshmallows. This event also often seems to include some impromptu singing. (Participation is not obligatory!). Chargeable event.
If you live in the city you will be gobsmacked by how bright the stars shine in Devon. We often bring out the telescope to gaze at the more easily identifiable stars, planets and constellations. We're not experts but enjoy this activity as much as our guests. Free Activity
BBQ - Phil's Grill - Coming Soon
Although all of our holiday accommodation has it's own BBQ, if the weather is good we arrange a special BBQ known as Phil's grill. Despite the corny name we serve steaks, burgers, salads etc and the drinks seem to appear pretty regularly too! Chargeable event.
Farmer for the morning
Not reserved just to children, the farmer for a morning event (around 30 mins from 08:00) is probably our most requested activity. A maximum of two guests (parents may be required) assist us feeding and watering all the animals. We also lead the goats and kids out to the pasture for the day and make sure that the animal housing is clean and has fresh bedding. Coveralls supplied. Chargeable activity. Available on a first come first served basis.
The following activities and sites are in the local area:
There are a number of trekking routes located close by including the Ruby Way , a reclaimed railway line through the Devon countryside open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. A little further away is the South West Coast path and the hills and mountains of Dartmoor (around 30 mins by car).
Great cycle routes are available for use free of charge at Cookworthy forest, Holsworthy woods The Ruby Way and at Dartmoor. A number of routes in Cookworthy Forest and Holsworthy woods are relatively level and perfect for family cycling with younger members of the family.
With such great landscape around it would be a sin to not enjoy a lazy sunny picnic. Dunsland Park National Trust site next door is perfect as are a number other 'secret' spots we know you will love. We can supply fully stocked wicker picnic hampers on request. Ask us about food and drink options.
We are aware of a number of geo-caches within walking distance of Puddleduck Valley. If you fancy a spot of orienteering with the children this is the perfect opportunity without having to get in the car.
The surrounding area has a variety of bridleways for horse riders to try in addition to a number of riding stables that lead out pony treks around the year. Let us know in advance and we can arrange the booking for you.
Devon and nearby Cornwall are blessed with some of the best beaches in the U.K. If want a busy town based beach head for Summerleaze. If you fancy a bit of rock pooling, beach coming and amazing rock formations head to Sandymouth or if you want somewhere rather secret and quiet just ask us...
Believe it or not there is a local vineyard within 4 miles of Puddleduck Valley.
Archery is available within a 5 minute drive of Puddleduck Valley at Dragon Archery.
•Surfing & body boarding
The nearby beaches at Bude, Widemouth and Sandymouth (around 25min drive) are all famous surfing beaches with RNLI lifeguards. Body boarding is hugely popular with particpants aged 6 to 80. Our Information blackboard at the house lists high and low tide times and weather forecasts for the coming days.
Famous for it's quaint beauty, Clovelly is a National Trust village on the North coast of Devon within around 35 minute drive from Puddleduck Valley. A firm favourite with older guests.
Equally stunning in spring, summer and autumn RHS Rosemoor's gardens and education workshops are a real gem. Based just to the east of Torrington, RHS members and one guest can enter free of charge.
Based in Bude, fishing boats can be chartered for serious sea anglers or family mackerel jaunts. We will happily freeze your catch for you ready for your return home.
Nearby Holsworthy golf club nearby offer day passes to golfers.
Located close to Torrington (around a 25 minute drive). The world famous Dartington Crystal centre runs factory tours and demonstrations of glass blowing.
