Swallow Tail offers a unique opportunity to stay aboard a traditional canal barge without the worry of locks and waterways. She is custom built to offer the maximum comfort and style for 4 people sleeping in two cabins. Both cabins have their own shower/wc, the double is ensuite and also has its own deck from which to watch the world go by. Blagdon Water provides the visitor with the peace and tranquility nowadays rarely found. Swallow Tail offers the perfect location in which to relax and enjoy the surrounding countryside and wildlife which freely roams around her.

The West Country / Devon region

Devon is one of the most beautiful and diverse counties in England and is reknown for its dramatic and unspoilt northern coast line. Both Exmoor and Dartmoor provide wonderful walking and horseriding opportunities with breathtaking countryside, peace and tranquility. Many National Trust properties such as Castle Drogo, Cuckland Abbey, Saltram House, Finch Foundry, Lydford Gorge are within easy reach. Theme Parks are in abundance around Bude and further along the Atlantic Highway.
Blagdon Water offers the visitor to this wonderful county an ideal location from which to explore.

Holsworthy area

Holsworthy is a small rural market town in North Devon 14 miles from Launceston and the Cornish border. The holiday town of Bude only 8 miles to the west offers many seaside activities and great shopping. Bude is the home of the reknown Jazz Festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend. Roadford Lake offers many watersports such as sailing and windsurfing and is only 10 miles away. Holsworthy priovides the visitor with everyday shopping, a good sized supermarket, a weekly famers market on Wednesdays. An organic farm shop only 1 miles away provides excellent quality meat and vegetables. Horse riding can be arranged. Cycle routes surround the property. There are many places to eat in the surrounding area varying from the exceptional to the everyday.

How to get there

Easiest access is by car. However it is possible to get to either Exeter airport or train station. There is a very sparse bus service from here.

Swallow Tail has the luxury of plenty of space rarely found onboard a boat. The main salon is light and airy, double doors enter the boat from a spacious aft deck from which the visitor can view the lake and all its goings on.

Swallow Tail is located at Blagdon Water. 35 acres of natural habitat, exclusive to visitors of either Swallow Tail or Painted Lady, her sistership. Due to the nature of the site, the newly planted woodland, lake and wetland, a variety of wildlife has made it home. Sitings include deer, rabbits, hares, foxes, hunting birds, barn owls, cockoos, kingfishers and many many waterbirds. Fishing is available for those that enjoy the sport or simply need an excuse to sit and watch the water.

Further details

Swallow Tail and Painted Lady share the 35 acre site. They are close enough together that a large party can rent both boats and not be too far away, however individual parties can enjoy their own privacy without being overlooked from either boat.
As the project tries to follow environmental lines, the boat is solar powered which means that all electricity on board is 12v. There is plenty of lighting, a cd/radio unit but the boat is not able to manage domestic appliances. We have not found this to be a problem as most visitors are happy to leave their appliances at home.

If you wish to bring a pet with you please call us to discuss the matter. We try not to encourage pets due to the nesting and breeding birdlife.
Young children are very welcome but parents must be aware of the possible hazards of being on a boat and having deep water all around. Life jackets are available.
