The grit stone country of pennine Yorkshire is characterised by rugged moors and dramatic scenery. West Yorkshire was known for its wool and cloth production but many of the mills have now been adapted to house shops and museums, others such as Britain's only surviving clog mill at Hebden Bridge are still producing the original goods.
The Holmfirth area
Upper Denby is a beautiful village to explore with it's wonderful stone cottages, cottage gardens, local public house, historic church and listed tythe barn which is of great historical importance. Nearby is the small town of Holmfirth with its quaint shops and small independent cinema and theatre. Holmfirth is also the home of Bamforths, producers of the famous saucy postcards.
Homfirth was also used as the location for the television programme 'Last Of The Summer Wine'. Visitors can see Norah Batty's house which featured in the series and visit the museum dedicated to the programme. Holmfirth holds an annual 'festival of folk' in May with many artists preforming from around England. There are often continental markets held on the streets.

A very warm welcome is always welcomed especially when a wonderful selection of goods is provided to save on the first shopping trip. Very comfortable, bedrooms are a nice size. Only draw back is the toilet is downstairs. Would recommend a visit to this cottage. The George, being the local pub is only 100 yds away. The Dunkirk a mile further on does some very nice meals which the The George does not provide. I found the Wi-Fi which is offered not to be that great on reception. |

This was our second visit to Manor Farm Cottage and we enjoyed it just as much this time. Our family, which included our 24 year old son, spent Christmas and New Year in the cottage which was always very cosy and warm. The property is tastefully decorated and this time included a Christmas tree and extra festive touches. We also appreciated the lovely welcome pack from Catherine and Charles, the owners. There is a lovely garden which is to be enjoyed during the warmer months. There are some very scenic walks through this area with a cosy pub just a short stroll down the road. We also enjoyed watching the alpacas and other farm animals through the kitchen window. This cottage oozes character, charm and history and is extremely well maintained by the owners. We'll definitely return on our next visit to England. |
