About this location
The Saint James Parish region
St James on the West Coast is a lovely part of Barbados with superb golden coral beaches, calm sea and beautiful sunsets over the water. Perfect for relaxing whether you want watersports, snorkelling over coral reefs or simply lying on the golden sands with a good book and contemplating a rum punch or Banks beer - always a tough decision!
Discovery Bay and Settlers beaches are ideal for swimming with gently shelving sand, jet ski free areas marked by buoys & floating platforms for diving or sunbathing. If you want to chill in the shade they are fringed with Coconut Palms & Casuarina trees. Water skiing and other aqua sports are available on the beach - or you can book ahead at Sandpiper's kiosk.
As well as Discovery Bay beach on the doorstep Settlers beach is only 100 yards away. Just beyond that Folkestone Marine Centre offers snorkelling over its reef, shaded picnic tables, tennis courts and a popular playground for younger children.
Other activities on hand include: waterskiing, diving, glass bottom boats, jet skis.
Holetown, 500 yards away is where the first British settlers arrived. It is the focal point of the Barbados West Coast with Sandy Lane to the South and bustling, colourful Speightstown 5 miles to the North. Bridgetown is 9 miles to the South.
An excellent local bus service runs up the West Coast linking Holetown with Speightstown, Bridgetown and the South and East Coasts of Barbados. Buses run every few minutes and cost less than 20 pence.
Patisserie Flint (200 yards) can ease you into another laid back day with a latte and delicious banana bread or a full English breakfast.
Zacchios Restaurant is a favourite 5 minutes stroll away with water side eating at sensible prices. Nearby Inn on the Beach has a great value buffet lunch and lovely setting. Surfside Bar & Restaurant has a great Happy Hour, simple beach menu and TV screens for sports lovers. Coxies and Groots are popular bars a short walk North and Lexy Piano Bar enlivens the town.
Holetown's First and Second Streets offer a mix including Mediterranean, Bajan, South Indian, Italian and Asian restaurants. For upmarket dining Tides and The Mews deserve their reputations.
Holetown also has a shopping mall with a very good supermarket, duty free shopping, banks and a medical centre. There is more shopping in the nearby Chattel House Shopping Village. There is another shopping mall at Sunset Crest mall, half a mile South.
