The South Island region

The West Coast of the South Island is a special and interesting place to visit and stay. It has many different facets to it, including pioneering days of gold mining which still continue today and the most contrasting scenery and forests with breathtaking mountains in the background as well as some of the most stunning sunsets.

Hokitika is in the middle of the West Coast and most of the coast can be reached within a couple of hours each way to either the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier within 3 1/2 hours or in the other direction 2 1/2 hours to Westport with some of the most beautiful scenery in between. The temperatures can vary but the West Coast is an idyllic forest area with a unique sub tropical landscape.

We also have on our doorstep literally, 250m the new Treetop Walk which is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Also the Heritage Cycle Track is partly on our road outside our house. There are many walks around the area to take and lots of beautiful scenery to see. Birdlife abounds with many different and varied species of native birds in our area.

We are also famous for our Hokitika Wildfoods Festival held in Hokitika in March.

The Hokitika area also has Lake Kaniere where you can fish or go boating on or if you prefer some lovely walks as well. Also the Hokitika Gorge with its swing bridge is also a lovely spot to visit with a lovely forest walk to the swing bridge. Especially dramatic when there has been rain in the last day or so.

Hokitika township has the Kiwi Centre, Hokitika Glass blowing studio and several pounamu or greenstone shops and many other attractions as well as many cafes for meals or just a drink or two.
