The Northern Province region

The province shares borders with the neighbouring SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) countries of Botswana in the western side, Mozambique on the east and Zimbabwe in the north. Its proximity to all these SADC countries makes Limpopo the perfect springboard for exploring the riches of this exciting part of the African continent. The Kruger National Park, the biggest in South Africa, is one of the most repositories of the bird and animal life in the world.

Hoedspruit area

Incredible, Inspiring and breathtaking. Hidden deep inside the South African lowveld lies a little treasure called Hoedspruit. Surrounded by thick wild African bush and game farms filled with the finest fauna and flora, this magical town must be one of South Africa's best kept secrets. It's the perfect getaway, with pastimes and activities such as game viewing, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, whitewater rafting and hot air ballooning.

The Blyde River Canyon (recently renamed the Motlatse) is the third deepest canyon in the world (after the Grand Canyon in the western U.S. and Namibia's Fish Eagle Canyon). It ranks as one of the most spectacular sights in Africa. This great Escarpment is the kind of place where brochures and guide books run out of original adjectives to describe the fresh mountain scenery and magnificent panoramic views over cliffs rising 600m-800m from the river bed. The entire canyon extends over twenty kilometres in length. Blyde Canyon cuts through the Drakensberg Mountain Range, one of the seven major mountain systems in Africa.

The botanical wonders of these high altitude afromontane forests can be witnessed while walking some unforgettable trails laid out under the forest canopy. Beneath the Canyon the Blyde River also yields the unique and critically threatened Lowveld Riparian Forest, which now covers only 100 hectares in extent.

The Kruger National Park (80 km away), the biggest in South Africa, is one of the most repositories of the bird and animal life in the world. Scenic routes. The Panarama route with sights such as Blyde River Canyon (3rd largest in world), Bourke's Luck potholes, God's Window, World's window, The Pinnacle, Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls, and Graskop Gorge within half an hour. From the town of Sabie you can visit Mac Mac pools, Mac Mac falls, Horsehoe falls, Bridal Veil falls, Lone Creek Falls. Romantic old town Pilgrim's Rest is 150 km away.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Eastgate airport in Hoedspruit, 7 km from Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. Daily flights from Johannesburg - South African Airways. It is highly recommended to hire a car at this airport for the whole duration of the holiday. Or you can take a 5-hour drive from Johannesburg/Pretoria.

Hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, all cutlery, crockery, glasses, pots and pans. Double sink and rinse bowl. Polished concrete tops. Unit cleaned daily.
Four separate bathrooms between bedrooms. Two with corner bath and basin, Two with shower, basin and toilet. Guest toilet in the lounge.

All towels and linen included. Housekeeping and cleaning every other day and all linen and towels changed weekly. Laundry services at shopping centre outside main gate.

'Havent seen rhino but we did have wild dogs running through next to the bedroom yesterday am. They ran around the house and across the road obviously hunting. About 1 1/2 hours later there was a squeal ( warthog?) and then easily 40 + vultures appeared from nowhere and descended into the bush about 100m into the bush in front of the verandah.'

'It seems the leopard has 2 cubs and is living in the bush between this house and the main road to the gate '
I am using the pool daily to do exercises. I use an exercise bike in UK when its too cold to walk much, and hubby gets his feet wet every afternoon.

Had giraffe footprints on the road 20m from the house, didnt see the giraffes and found the BIG waterhole ( complete with very large herd of buffalo going down to drink) beyond the smaller one by a roundabout route when we took the new game drive roads they are building into the bush
