The Tasmania region
Facing onto the sheltered waters of Frederick Henry Bay the region enjoys temperate conditions with the shallow waters being warm and inviting particularly during the summer months. The area is steeped in convict history with world famous ruins a short drive away or local ruins a short walk. Bush and beach walks are numerous but keep your eyes open for pieces of crockery or convict brick that are often found on trails or washed up on the shoreline. For the more adventurous there is horse riding or fishing charters are available from Eagle Hawk Neck and while you are there make sure you visit the Dog Chain and Do Town.
The Coal Mines penal settlement was Tasmania's first operational mine and was intended to reduce the colonies need to import coal. Although in opportation for 40 years the mines produced a low grade coal renown for popping and spitting. Coal from the mines can be seen along some sections of the water front. The Cola Mines also served as a place of punishment for Port Arthurs worst class of convicts and you can still walk into the underground cells which is an eiry experience at night. The site was closed as a probation station in 1848 although the mine continued to be worked privately for another 30 years. The surrounding land was later broken up for farming. In the 1960's the first of the weekenders started springing up along the coastline and fever since Tasmanian families have enjoyed fishing and waters sports in the pristine waters of Fredrick Henry Bay.
