The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The Turquoise Coast region (also known as the Lycia region) is Turkey’s south western Mediterranean coast and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are stunning white sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, pine forests and a backdrop of magnificent mountains. This region has a great climate, nearly 300 days of sunshine a year with temperatures rarely below 20 degrees and very little rainfall. The town of Hisaronu is set on a plateau 1000ft above sea level thereby benefiting from a cooling breeze, making it more comfortable in the hot summer temperatures than other areas nearby.

This region has a wealth of history and offers exciting ruins from ancient Byzantine, Roman and Lycian civilisations to explore, such as Tlos, Xanthos and Myra. There are also many amazing natural sights to discover such as Saklikent Gorge, Olu Deniz, Patara Beach and River.

Olu Deniz: The famous Blue Lagoon has been described by many as one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey and is definitely the most photographed. Relax in the sunshine, or take part in a range of water sports, scuba diving, snorkelling or pedalos or join one of the boat trips which leave from the beach daily. For the more adventurous, why not try paragliding from the top of the Babadag mountains right down to the beach itself. Olu Deniz is only 5 minutes drive away from Hisaronu.

Tlos: One of the oldest settlements of the 72 ancient Lycian cities. It is known as the city where mythological hero Bellerophon and his winged flying horse Pegasus lived. Climb up the ruins of Tlos and discover the elaborate rock tombs of Lycia whilst enjoying stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Saklikent Gorge: Saklikent is one of the largest gorges in Europe and was formed throughout centuries of melting snow. The gorge stretches some 18km but is only accessible for a few kilometres by foot. The whole area has truly magnificent scenery and the drive from Hisaronu takes you through some of Turkey’s most picturesque countryside. Be prepared to get wet as you walk up the gorge – waterproof shoes are a must (you can hire them but they are not very comfortable) – and a pair of shorts is recommended as the water can be knee deep in some parts. On hot sunny days the clear cool waters and soft mineral mud river bed make a welcome change. On your return there are some lovely restaurants by the water’s edge where you can relax and enjoy a cold drink and fresh pancakes. If this is too sedate for you, there’s always rafting down the rapids in a dingy!

Patara beach/river and Myra: Patara was the birthplace of St Nicholas, the 4th century Byzantine bishop who later became legend in the guise of Santa Claus. There are many ruins to be discovered here at Patara including baths, temples and tombs, together with the amphitheatre and ruins at nearby Myra. Through the village of Patara and you arrive at the stunning white sand beach – 50m wide and a massive 20km long. The warm waters are shallow at its coastline and rolling waves invite you to take a dip. Snack bars and showers are available on the beach.

Hisaronu area

The apartment is in a private complex and a peaceful location but only a 5-10 minute walk from the centre of Hisaronu. The town of Hisaronu is very popular with British holiday makers so the locals all speak English and are extremely courteous and friendly. It is a lively town with shops selling a rich mix of clothes, shoes, jewellery and anything else you can think of inter-twined with bars and restaurants catering for all tastes and ages to enjoy. Although most bars stay open until the early hours, due to the apartment location this will not disturb you. There are two good supermarkets within a few minutes walk from the apartment.

Monday is traditionally market day in Hisaronu with lots of leather and textile bargains to be had, and a wonderful array of fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, Turkish teas and of course Turkish delight!

Hisaronu is very central for everything, hop on a dolmus (cheap and run all the time) and discover Olu Deniz, Fethiye or Kaya Koy – the ghost village.

The nearby town of Fethiye was once a small market town but has now become a thriving harbour town and tourist attraction. Tuesday is market day in Fethiye and this takes place alongside the canal offering a fantastic array of aromatic spices, fruit and vegetables together with good quality leather bags and shoes, silver jewellery, soft furnishings and much more. By night, Fethiye is transformed with its great choice of restaurants bars and clubs. The town itself dates back to the 6th century BC and is steeped in history. Whilst walking through the town traces of the ancient Lycian settlements can be seen including the amazing rock tombs built into the cliff face close to the ruins of the fortress built by the knights of Rhodes.

Kaya Koy – or ghost village – was called Levissi for most of its history and comprises of some 2000 stone houses. It is just 6km from Hisaronu and can easily be reached by dolmus. It was deserted by its Ottoman-Greek inhabitants who moved to the outskirts of Athens following the Turkish War of Independence. Local Turkish residents as a mark of respect have left the site uninhabited in the event that one day the Greeks may return. Kaya Koy is exceptional and well worth a visit.

There are plenty of activities and places to see in and around Hisaronu, including Jeep Safari, Quad Biking, Gulet Cruises, Island hopping and much more (a few of which are also mentioned above). All excursions can be booked locally through any one of the tour offices in Hisaronu at competitive rates.
