The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The coastline in this part of Turkey is known as the Turquoise coast. The mountainous region around the coast provides ideal cool mountain breezes in the heat of the summer and some of the most stunning scenery the Mediterranean has to offer. The resort of Olu Deniz approximately 4km away has probably the most photographed coastline in Turkey and consists of a long expanse of public beach as well as the many smaller private beaches around the Blue Lagoon. Fethiye, once a small market town and fishing village is now a thriving harbour town and tourist attraction. Whilst walking through the town traces of the ancient Lycian settlements can be seen including the amazing rock tombs on the east face of the city. Summer temperatures are generally between 30-40 deg C.
Hisaronu area
Hisarönü is located on a plateau a couple of kilometres above the famous Oludeniz beach. The town is friendly and lively with an excellent selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. A typical 3 course meal can cost less than £8.00. There are also a number of Chinese and Indian restaurants plus Turkish restaurants serving typical fayre. The lamb dish’s are a must. Local alcohol is cheaper than the UK with a large beer is just over a pound. Hisarönü has an abundance of shops selling everything from Turkish artefacts to fake designer gear. There is also a weekly market every Monday. The nightlife in Hisarönü is both lively and friendly with lots to do for all the family.
The Islands boat trips are a relaxing way to spend the day, touring the beautiful coves and islands of the Turquoise Coast, with breaks for lunch and swimming. Paragliding from the 1900m summit of Mount Babadağ commands stunning views over not only the lagoon of Ölü Deniz, but as far a field as Patara, Dalaman and even the Greek island of Rhodes on a clear day. Expect to pay around £60 for the experience. Butterfly Valley is a lush canyon, home to several species of butterfly, the most notable of which is the Jersey Tiger. The spectacular Saklıkent gorge carved from Mount Akdağ stretches an incredible 18km into the rock face. It is possible to walk through the gorge, however, you first need to negotiate the walk through the strong stream of freezing cold water from the Gökçesu/Ulupınar springs. Alternatively, take a waterside table at a neighbouring café and watch the more adventurous swimming in the springs! Aquacity is situated in Çalış, the Aquapark can be easily accessed from Hisarönü. The upmarket port of Göcek is popular yachting base which features an attractive marina and a small selection of restaurants and shops. There are diving opportunities aplenty in the local waters for divers of all abilities. Quad biking, Jeep safari, Horse riding, Fishing, Canoeing, Microlight, River rafting and much, much more.
