The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Turkey's south-west coastline, known in ancient times as Lycia, is a holiday destination of breathtaking beauty, with pine-covered slopes rising steeply straight out of the Mediterranean. This region offers some of the best beaches in the world, picturesque harbours, deserted coves and an unrivaled archaeological heritage.
Fethiye harbour, within easy reach by dolmus, enjoys one of the most scenic locations of any port town in the world. The waterfront is completely accessible by continuous promenade extending north towards Calis.
This region appeals to sun-worshipers, families, mature couples, walkers, photographers, nature lovers and history enthusiasts, sailors and divers, not to mention paraglider pilots.
Climate in brief: April - May:~ Nice for serious walking and active outdoor pursuits. Bring jumper for cool evenings. (around 20-28 degrees C daytime temperatures). June:~ Perfect beach weather (28-34 degrees C). Bring shorts and sun block. July - August:~ High summer is very dry and very, very hot (36-48 degrees C, in the shade) Wear a hat, loose clothing and drink plenty! Sept - October:~ Perfect, like June (still 28-30 degrees C in mid-October 2007). Nov. - March:~ Milder winters than the UK. (12-20 degrees C)
Hisaronu / Ovacik area
Many roads in the region follow the scenic coastline. You are rarely more than 10 minutes drive from the sea. The most accessible bathing beaches are at Belcekiz (frequently served by dolmus minibus) and at Olu Deniz (the 'must see' photogenic Blue Lagoon, featured in all good holiday brochures). For a change of scenery try tranquil Kidrak Beach, which may be reached by car, taxi or dolmus serving Club Lykia World. Alternatively, enjoy the journey to Calis Beach by water taxi along canals through the wetlands - catch water-taxis from Fethiye harbour by the day trip boat moorings in Paspatur District.
Ovacik's friendly local restaurants and shops are just 150 metres away on the main road. A greater choice of international cuisine (Thai, Indian, Italian, Chinese and Turkish restaurants) is available in nearby Hisaronu Centre about a mile away (3 minutes by dolmus) or a 20 minute walk through quiet Ovacik village back-lanes. Visitors seeking a lively nightlife will find Hisaronu's numerous bars open until the early hours and nightclubs where you can dance until dawn.
For a more sedate evening of promenading and al frescoe dining, Fethiye's attractive waterfront, illuminated by night and offering sublime views of the bay, takes some beating. The best fish restaurants can be found behind the gulet moorings, near the fish quay. Away from the harbour, restaurants catering to a local Turkish clientele, are particularly good value.
The water-slides at Ovacik Aquapark are within 5 minute walking distance of the apartment. Horse riding is available from Hisaronu outskirts, a 15 minute walk through Ovacik village. Big kids of all ages can blast up the dirt forest trails of Kaya valley on a rented quad bike. A variety of watersports, boat tours and fishing trips are bookable through local agents. The Butterfly Valley and 12 Islands boat trips are recommended.
For the adventurous, tandem paraglider pilots offer scenic 40 minute flights from Baba Dag mountain (1967 metres) over the Turquoise Coast and blue lagoon before landing on Olu Deniz promenade. Microlight flights are also available. Airsports are very popular, with an annual Olu Deniz Air Festival held at the end of October, showcasing extreme stunt flying and competitions.
Scuba diving is a pleasure with excellent visibility and warm sea temperatures. Local dive sites include reefs, tunnels, caves, drop-offs and archaeological sites dating to 300BC. Several dive schools can be found in the Fethiye Bay area - visit www.dive-centres.net
For more quiet enjoyment explore nearby Kaya valley, an unspoilt slice of authentic rural Turkey, with orchards, small farms and extensive ruins of Kayakoy ghost town. From the hilltop above Kayakoy there is a recommended picturesque coastal walk (6km) down to Olu Deniz. The mountains are alive with abundant wild flowers in March and April. Alternatively, from Kayakoy it is well worth continuing onward to Gemiller beach by car or infrequent dolmus service for amazing views of St Nicholas Island and secluded small beaches among pine trees.
The Hisaronu area offers some stunning coastal mountain scenery, whether you choose to do some serious hill-walking or simply admire the land and seascapes from afar. There are several enjoyable hiking trails within easy reach of the apartment and others accessible by public transport (including walk downhill and bus back uphill options, for softies!)
Fethiye's archaeological heritage includes 500BC Lycian rock-cut tombs in the cliffs above the old district of Paspatur, several Roman sarcophagus and a crusader fort built to protect pilgrims en route to the Holy Land. Aspiring Indiana Jones/Lara Crofts will want to discover the overgrown Roman town of Cadyanda, concealed by forest, on a hilltop overlooking Fethiye. Here Roman baths, a stadium, theatre, fortifications, cisterns and underground stores remain. Access is possible by 2WD hire car, with an element of brave off-road driving across mud-slides adding to the adventure!
Jeep safaris are the highlight of their holiday for many visitors who like to sight-see with the wind in your hair and flies in your teeth! I recommend the air conditioned coach trips myself! Additional Lycian tombs still undergoing further archaeological excavation and more impressive Roman structures, topped by a 14th Century Ottoman fortress may be visited at Tlos by jeep safari excursion or coach tours, which also typically include the Saklikent river gorge to explore and the beautiful watergardens and trout farm at Yakapark for lunch.
For an authentic Turkish experience visit Fethiye's vast Tuesday street market to buy fresh provisions and haggle for leather goods, silver jewelery and souvenirs; try a Turkish bath, belly dancing or a traditional meal of lamb stew baked in a clay jar.
How to get there
~ Fly to Dalaman airport. A good choice of charter carriers fly from many regional airports of the UK from April to October. www.cheapflightseats.com and www.travelsupermarket.com are useful flight price comparison websites. Flights from around £155+ return off-peak, rising to £250+ in high season. Book flights early (ideally 6 months + ahead) for best deals. Recommended are:- www.aegeanflights.com; Monarch/Jet2 at www.avro.co.uk; Onur Air through www.goldtrail.co.uk; XL.com and www.thomsonfly.com. Flythomascook.com are more flexible on dates if you want durations other than 7 or 14 nights in Turkey, one-way trips or winter flights. Easyjet fly Gatwick-Dalaman from April 2008. During the winter months options are more limited. Thomas Cook do operate all year round from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Stanstead and Newcastle. Visit www.flythomascook.com
~ 50 minutes airport transfer to Mekik apartments by private-hire car with a safe, reliable driver. Our airport transfer is currently £30 each way for the car when pre-booked (for 6 persons with luggage) but may have to be increased in light of escalating fuel prices. (This is much cheaper than tour operators coach transfers and is typically an hour quicker).
~ If you wish to hire a car for the whole duration of your stay, car rentals are available from Dalaman airport. Book online for best rates: www.auto-europe.co.uk is recommended. Air conditioning is essential in high summer. Petrol is more expensive in Turkey than in the UK. Ask me for driving directions to the apartment.
~ Mekik Apartments are located in Ovacik, just 150 metres from the main Fethiye to Olu Deniz road. Turn right behind Hotel Monte Verde and first right past Hotel Ruya onto 46 Sokak. The walled and gated apartment complex, painted orange and white, is situated half way along the lane on the right hand side.
Getting Around the Local Area ~ From the main road just flag down a Dolmus (minibus) to Olu Deniz beach (a 10 minute trip) via Hisaronu resort centre, or in the opposite direction to Fethiye town (15 minutes). The excellent dolmus service runs every 10 minutes from 7 am until midnight; fare: 2.5YTL to Fethiye (around a £1) each way. Olu Deniz and Hisaronu bus fares: 2YTL
~ Cars can also be hired locally by the day from £20. We recommend Lykia Tour Rent-a-Car. Discounts are available after 7 days hire and free airport transfers included with 7 days car hire.

We accept payments by cheque in Sterling (GBP) or Turkish Lira (YTL). £100 booking deposit secures your chosen dates. Final balance is due 30 days before you arrive. Cancellation of holiday within 30 days of start date jeopardises £100 deposit, if we are unable to let those weeks to others.
Air-conditioning/heating is included in the tariff for all weeks. The apartment will always be professionally cleaned before your arrival and at the start of second and subsequent weeks. This is included in the price of your holiday. Bed linen and towels are supplied and changed.
Dalaman Airport transfer by private car available at £30 (for the whole car, for 6 persons) each way when booked in advance. Please let us know your flight number and arrival time a few days beforehand.
Guestbook
We really enjoyed our fortnight stay at your apartment in Ovacik. We were impressed by the cool, spacious interior and quality of the furnishings. Everything new and fresh. We particularly enjoyed eating breakfast on the balcony and swimming in the pool.
Thank you for your suggestions for excursions. We didn't hire a car in the end, finding the frequent dolmus service to be excellent, combined with organised sight-seeing tours. We appreciate beautiful scenery and opted for the 12 Islands gulet cruise around Fethiye Bay and enjoyed the Tlos/Yakapark/Saklikent Gorge coach trip. Your rep negotiated some good discounts on excursions for us. The airport transfer driver turned up on time and drove well.
Thanks for everything. We would like to come again next year! Anne & John, Brixham, Devon.
