( There are several food shops and minimarkets within 200 metres of the apartment, some open 24 hours/7 days and will deliver for free. BIM is a discount chain like Aldi/Lidl. Azda in Hisaronu is biggest and has the best choice. )
The washing machine is useful for longer stays. ( Why struggle through airports with huge suitcases, when you could be packing light? I often fly with 'hand baggage only' and save money and time at airports ). Its so hot here, laundry line-dries in an hour! Clothes airer and iron are provided.
Further details outdoors:
Relax by the pool, beneath shady palms and grape vines. Socialise with a BBQ, a game of darts, snooker or table tennis. Meet welcoming ex-pats and learn of recommended shops, markets, walks and local places of interest.
Dine outdoors on spacious private balcony, offering views of Baba Dag ('Father mountain')
or simply unwind in the hammock with a book.
Secure walled and gated community with gardens suitable for families.
Shaded car parking available - a real bonus in summer!

BookThe Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Turkey's south-west coastline, known in ancient times as Lycia, is a holiday destination of breathtaking beauty, with pine-covered slopes rising steeply straight out of the Mediterranean. This region offers some of the best beaches in the world, picturesque harbours, deserted coves and an unrivalled archaeological heritage.
Fethiye harbour, within easy reach by dolmus, enjoys one of the most scenic locations of any port town in the world. The beautiful waterfront is completely accessible by the newly completed continuous promenade linking Fethiye to Calis beach.
This region appeals to sun-worshipers, families, mature couples, walkers, photographers, nature lovers and history enthusiasts, sailors and divers, not to mention paraglider pilots.
Climate in brief:
April - May:~ is ideal for serious walking and active outdoor pursuits with 20-26 Celcius daytime temperatures and cool evenings.
June:~ expect perfect beach weather (24-36 Celcius). Bring shorts and sun block.
July - August:~ High summer is very dry and very, very hot ( 30-48 Celcius in the shade ). Wear a hat, loose clothing and drink plenty!
Sept - October:~ Perfect, like June (still 22-28 degrees C in early October)
The Hisaronu / Ovacik area
Many roads in the region follow the scenic coastline. You are rarely more than 10 minutes drive from the sea. The most accessible bathing beaches are at Belcekiz (frequently served by dolmus minibus) and at Olu Deniz (the 'must see' photogenic Blue Lagoon, featured in all good holiday brochures).
For a change of scenery, enjoy the journey to Calis Beach by water taxi across Fethiye harbour and along canals through wetlands. Catch water taxis from Fethiye harbour by the day trip boat moorings (behind Carrefour supermarket) in Paspatur District.
Ovacik's friendly local restaurants and shops are conveniently located just 150 metres away on the main road.
A greater choice of international cuisine (Thai, Indian, Italian, Chinese and Turkish restaurants) is available in nearby Hisaronu resort centre about a mile away (3 minutes by bus) or a 20 minute stroll through quiet village back-lanes.
Visitors seeking a lively nightlife will find Hisaronu's numerous bars open until the early hours and nightclubs where you can dance until dawn.
For a more sedate evening of promenading and al frescoe dining, Fethiye's attractive waterfront, illuminated by night and offering sublime views of the bay, takes some beating. The best fish restaurants can be found behind the gulet moorings, near the fish quay. Away from the harbour, restaurants catering to a local Turkish clientele, are particularly good value. You can buy fresh fish from the Fethiye fish market and have it cooked for you at a restaurant next door, served with salad and crusty bread for 7YTL.
The water-slides at Ovacik Aquapark are within 5 minute walking distance of the apartment.
Horse riding is available from Hisaronu outskirts, a 15 minute walk through Ovacik village.
Big kids of all ages can blast up the dirt forest trails of Kaya valley on a rented quad bike.
A variety of watersports, boat tours and fishing trips are bookable through local agents. The Butterfly Valley and 12 Islands boat trips are relaxing, include lunch and plenty of opportunities for swimming. White water rafting adventures are available on the Dalyan river as a day excursion - most exciting in springtime with highest water flows.
The winding coast roads offer truly spectacular scenery, perhaps best enjoyed by scooter if you are confident on 2 wheels (hire in Hisaronu from £8 per day). The best include the route from Lykia World to Kabak village, Kaya village to Gemiller Beach and my personal favourite, the circuit around the forested headland just outside Fethiye (start and finish through the boatyard beyond Karagozler, Fethiye), with numerous small secluded beaches for picnics and swimming.
For the adventurous, tandem paraglider pilots offer scenic 30 minute flights from Baba Dag mountain (1967 metres) over the Turquoise Coast and blue lagoon before landing on Olu Deniz promenade. Microlight flights are also available from local airstrip within walking distance. Airsports are very popular, with an annual Olu Deniz Air Festival held at the end of October, showcasing extreme stunt flying and competitions.
Scuba diving is a pleasure with excellent visibility and warm sea temperatures. Local dive sites include reefs, tunnels, caves, drop-offs and archaeological sites dating to 300BC.
Several dive schools can be found in the Fethiye Bay area - visit www.dive-centres.net
For more quiet enjoyment explore nearby Kaya valley, an unspoilt slice of authentic rural Turkey, with orchards, small farms and extensive ruins of Kayakoy ghost town. From the hilltop above Kayakoy there is a recommended picturesque coastal walk (6km) down to Olu Deniz. The mountains are alive with abundant wild flowers in March and April.
Alternatively, from Kayakoy it is well worth continuing onward to Gemiller beach by car or hourly dolmus bus service for amazing views of St Nicholas Island and secluded small beaches among pine trees.
The Hisaronu area offers some stunning coastal mountain scenery, whether you choose to do some serious hill-walking or simply admire the land and seascapes from afar. There are several enjoyable hiking trails within easy reach of the apartment and others accessible by public transport.
Fethiye's archaeological heritage includes 500BC Lycian rock-cut tombs in the cliffs above the old district of Paspatur, several Roman sarcophagus and a crusader fort built to protect pilgrims en route to the Holy Land.
Aspiring Indiana Jones/Lara Crofts will want to discover the overgrown Roman town of Cadyanda, concealed by forest, on a hilltop overlooking Fethiye. Here Roman baths, a stadium, theatre, fortifications, cisterns and underground stores remain. Access is possible by 2WD hire car, with an element of brave off-road driving across mud-slides adding to the adventure!
Jeep safaris are the highlight of the holiday for many visitors who like to sight-see with the wind in your hair, dust and flies in your teeth! I recommend the modern air conditioned coach trips myself! Lycian tombs undergoing archaeological excavation and impressive Roman structures, topped by a 14th Century Ottoman fort may be visited at Tlos by jeep safari or coach tours, which typically include the Saklikent river gorge to explore and the beautiful watergardens and trout farm at Yakapark for lunch.
For an authentic Turkish experience visit Fethiye's vast Tuesday street market to buy fresh provisions and haggle for leather goods, silver jewelery and souvenirs; try a Turkish bath, belly dancing or a traditional meal of lamb stew baked in a clay jar.

After a 5 hour delay we arrived at 4am Turkish time to be welcomed by the caretaker Hussan who helped carry our cases from our tired hands to our well equipped, clean and spacious apartment. We took to our beds and woke up to bright sunshine! the start of our holiday, and the sunshine continued for the duration of our stay. We soon began to feel comfortable as we began to explore the apartment surroundings with its beautiful, clean swimming pool along with a pool table and tabble tennis table that the kids loved and played on everyday. We virtually had the pool to ourselves as many of the apartments were un-occupied at the time so soon it became our home. Hussan was available everyday and was very helpful in more ways than one. Our younger son left his blackberry phone, half asleep, in the minibus that collected us from the airport (all arranged by Russell, the owner) and Hussan helped us to retrieve it with the help of the guy who manages the property. He also had 2 more keys cut for us as we had 2 teenagers who liked to stay up late!! We were situated in a place that was assessible to Hisaronu and Olu Deniz by the dolmus bus, that cost less than a pound each to travel, and the taxi services were good value too. There are plenty of local restaurants and many more in Hisaronu, which you could walk to in 15 mins. We often went to the lagoon in Olu Deniz by taking a free bus to the private beaches of Green Park, which sit alongside St. Nicholas beach and Billy's beach bars. You can pay 5 lira for adults and half price for kids to go onto the public lagoon at Olu Deniz off the main beach. We went on the 12 island boat trip as we had already been on the 6 island one last year, and these are a must costing around £6 -10 each for adults and discounts for children for a whole day including lunch of fish or chicken. We also went on the jeep safari (much fun!) and did the quad biking with the older children, all very good value! Russell the owner had left a whole heep of information in the apartment for us to read about the local areas and things to do which was of great help and very detailed! He was very pleasant and a great communicator. Overall we had a great holiday and love Turkey and would definately come back. Infact, we are in two years time to get married on the lagoon! can't wait. |
