The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Fethiye is one of Turkey's well-known tourist centers and is especially popular during the summer.
In the last ten years Fethiye has become a magnet for British citizens. Apart from its climate and natural beauty, the Britons are attracted by its less expensive lifestyle and the hospitality of the local people. The British population in Turkey is between 34,000 and 38,000. As a result of the large British population and the high numbers of Britons going there for holiday, Fethiye-Öludeniz was chosen as the best tourism centre in the world by The Times and The Guardian newspapers in 2007. Over 7,000 British citizens permanently live in Fethiye, while approximately 600,000 British tourists visit the town every summer.
The Fethiye Museum, which is very rich in ancient and more recent artifacts, displays and testifies to the successive chain of civilizations that existed in the area, starting with the ancient Lycians.
Fethiye is also home to the Tomb of Amyntas, a large and beautiful tomb built in 350 BC by the Lycians. What makes this tomb very unique is its massive size and beautiful carvings.
Ovacik and Hisaronu has many hotels and apartments, shops and restaurants, The resort is popular with British visitors and the shops, restaurants and bars cater extensively for the needs of all age groups. There is plenty of accommodation in the village, from pensions to hotels, most of which have their own swimming pool, ideal for those who want a lazy relaxing holiday.
Olu Deniz, which has the most photographed beach in Turkey and is only a ten minute journey by the regular Dolmus service down the mountain, where you will be able to find a variety of watersports ie.- water ski-ing, para sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, pedaloes etc.
For the braver of you there is paragliding from the top of Babadag mountain and landing on the beach. If you prefer a more relaxing day on the water there are a selection of boat trips available from both Olu Deniz and Fethiye.Olu Deniz beach sweeps round in a vast crescent of coarse sand and shingle to the Lagoon, which is a National Park area now and a small charge is levied for entry.
The cooler temperature in Hisaronu welcomes you back from a hard day at the beach and offers a well earned rest before your evenings entertainment. Hisaronu is a recently established resort and although it has grown in the last few years it still retains a friendly vibrant atmosphere. It is an ideal place for walkers as there are plenty of winding paths through the forests with wonderful views, and of course a visit to Kayakoy (the ghost village), where the Greeks once lived.Fethiye-Fish-Market
There are plenty of excursions on offer in the village where you will find plenty agencies for all your excursions ie: Ephesus,Pammukale,Dalyan and day trips to the Greek island of Rhodes. The night life in Hisaronu can be as lively or as quiet as you make it,you have plenty of choice. A must for shoppers is the market in Fethiye, where you will find the best bargains as it is the biggest Bazaar in the area.Fethiye itself is worth a visit to take in the history of the place, or to have a romantic walk round the harbour.I will suggest a visit to the fish/fruit market. It is an experience to buy the fish you like and have it prepared and served to you in one of the eateries in the market while watching everyday life go on around you.
