The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turquoise Coast or Lycia region of Turkey offers excellent weather throughout the season, with temperatures rarely below 20deg. and very little rainfall. The scenery is astonishingly beautiful, from idyllic coves and beaches bordering on a deep turquoise, crystal clear sea, to spectacular majestic mountains and tranquil pine forests.
This region of Turkey has been a sought-after location for many centuries and boasts a wealth of exciting ruins and remains of previous civilisations, such as Greek, Roman and Lycian. It is a peaceful area with an economy highly dependant on tourism today. The local people are friendly, engaging and respectful of other cultures.
Heading South-east from Dalaman Airport on the modern highway and through a newly constructed tunnel through the mountains, you pass the exclusive resort of Gocek, with its millionaires' yachts and pretty villas. You then pass through Fethiye, the main town of the region, which is a pleasant mix of old and new. There is a modern marina and excellent shopping, plus all necessary facilities, banks, post-offices etc. Fethiye also provides a view of older times with a charming 'souk-like' area, bustling with shops selling antiques, silver and gold, spices, leather goods, and of course fabulous Turkish carpets. There is also a wealth of excellent restaurants, offering fresh and high quality meat, fish and vegetarian dishes in a range of styles.
To the North-east of Fethiye are fascinating ancient sites such as Xanthos and Tlos, and also stunning natural features such as Saklikent Gorge, Patara Beach and the Patara River.
There are numerous local companies offering excursions and other activities such as jeep-safaris, horseriding, quad-biking, canoeing, rafting, boat-trips, water-sports, microlighting, which cleverly blend great fun with the opportunity to take in more of the special scenery and environment. These are easily booked locally within Hisaronu. There are also many good walks in the area which would allow you to take in the scenery at a more leisurely pace.
Hisaronu area
To the South of Fethiye up a well constructed highway into the mountains lies the resort of Hiaronu. Hisaronu began as a farming village until being discovered by back-packing holidaymakers in the 1960's. It is now a well managed and lively resort with an enormous wealth of restaurants and bars, catering for all tastes, budgets and ages. Due to strict laws restricting both the quantity and height of development, Hisaronu remains very picturesque, and allows excellent views of the surrounding mountains and fragrant pine forests. Being at about 300m above sea-level, and in the foothills of the mountains, the climate in Hisaronu offers slightly lower temperatures and a comforting gentle breeze compared to the nearby resort of Olu Deniz.
Easily accessible from Hisaronu by regular and low-price minibus (dolmus), Oludeniz is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular beaches in all of Turkey and beyond. Nestling at the foot of Babadag, a striking mountain famed as one of the best paragliding locations internationally, is the beach at Oludeniz and also the unique Blue-lagoon and conservation area. Oludeniz offers a wealth of water-borne activities and even the opportunity to take a tandem paraglide descent, landing on the beach after a 40 min flight from Babadag peak. Alternatively, you can spend a tranquil day in the conservation area bordering the lagoon, which is maintained to a very high standard, and offers secluded sunbathing as well as safe swimming for children in the shallow lagoon. In the evening, why not end your day with an exotic cocktail watching the sunset from a bar over the beach.
