The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Turkey’s south western Mediterranean Coast is often referred to as the Turquoise Coast, the area is surrounded by breath taking views, with stunning mountain backdrops and pine clad forests, its beauty is unquestionable. There are numerous well-known ancient ruins throughout the area and stunning scenery everywhere.
If you are visiting Turkey for the first time you are in for a wonderful surprise, you will be truly amazed by some of the most dramatic scenery Europe has to offer. Sparkling turquoise seas, endless golden sun kissed beaches, bathed in sunshine for nearly 300 days a year and local Turkish hospitality that is second to none.
Want more from your holiday in Turkey than sun and beautiful beaches? The Turquoise Coast has plenty of activities on offer. For those feeling adventurous Turkey has become the number one destination for paragliding enthusiasts . Tandem flights are offered at Oludeniz, so you don't need to be a paraglider pilot to enjoy this unique experience.
Fethiye is a pretty town set at the foot of the pine-clad Mount Mendos and curving around a deep blue, island-scattered bay,it is no more than a 15 minute dolmus ride away from the villa. The town has a lovely harbour and a distinct 'souk-like' atmosphere with a maze of streets lined with restaurants, bars and carpet, leather and spice shops.
Turkey is also a paradise for walkers, the Lycian way is a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast and mountains, starting from Fethiye and finishing in Antalya and is one of the most popular routes for walking holidays
The Hisaronu / Central Hisaronu area
.The charming hill town of Hisaronu, a short distance inland from Turkey's Mediterranean coast, has boomed into a popular holiday resort bristling with hotels, bars, restaurants, shops , ideally situated for those intent on exploring the region, enjoying an active holiday,or just relaxing in the sun. Hisaronu is centrally located within a short 'dolmus' (local taxi) ride from the busy centre of Fethiye, the beautiful seaside resort of Oludeniz with its blue lagoon and crescent beach, and numerous sites of interest. The area offers a ruggedly beautiful landscape, ideal for walkers, and a coast filled with secluded bays and coves accessed through winding forest paths. Being set at high altitude the town also has the advantage of being cooler and less humid than the coast, a pleasant refuge to retreat to after a day in the summer sun.
The main street of Hisaronu is well supplied with a variety of shops selling everything holidaymakers look for in Turkey, from fake designer-wear to carpets , leather goods and gold. Haggling is expected and part of the shopping experience.
Hisaronu has a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants to cater for the tastes of international tourists, from traditional English to sizzling pizzas and spicy Mexican and of course Turkish..
Turkey offers many activities including, horse riding, wind surfing, kite surfing, water skiing, and paracending.
Oludeniz
Explore the bay and beautiful Blue Lagoon (Oludeniz) where the calm, crystal clear water is ideal for swimming and other water sports. The Blue Lagoon is one of the best places in the world to do absolutely nothing but soak up the sun amid stunning natural surroundings.
So beautiful is the Karmylassos (Kayakoy), so rich the soil, so tranquil the air and so slow the pace of traditional rural life, that, it is hard to believe the bustling Fethiye and famous Olu Deniz beach are only a short drive away. The dreamlike beauty of Kaya Valley is magnified by the evocative ruins of the abandoned Greek village of the same name.
Tlos 36 kms south of Fethiye, is the the oldest city in the Lycian region and the home of the Lycian Hero Bellerophon. Visitors can see the remains of a castle, the agora, the necropolis, the theatre, Roman baths and a good view of Esen Valley.
High in the mountains above Fethiye a rushing torrent cuts a narrow gorge through the mountains, creating Saklikent Canyon 44 km south of Fethiye.
A cool refuge on hot summer days, Saklikent is a favourite picnic spot, with rustic restaurants serving delectable fresh trout. You can also visit the old fashioned carpet and kilim weavers.
At the Lycian cultic centre of Letoon, six km far from Xanthos, three temples dedicated to Leto, Apollo and Artemis, familiar gods of mythology, await the exploring tourist.
The ancient Lycian capital of Xanthos, today in the Turkish village Kinik, lies 18 km north of Patara. The theatre, Tomb of the Harpies, Nereid Monument, agora, and Inscribed Pillar, among a mixture of ruins from Lycian, Roman and Byzantine times, create a special atmosphere at this site.
Dalyan (Caunos)
The maze of channels is easily explored by boat as you immerse yourself in this tranquil dream world. Restaurants which line the waterways specialize in delicious fresh fish.
Magnificent tombs were carved into the rock high on the cliff face, at a bend in the river, above the fascinating ancient harbour of city Caunos. The Dalyan Delta, with the long, golden, sandy Iztuzu beach at its mouth, is a nature conservation area and a refuge for sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and blue crabs.
Visit the classical archaeological site at Ephesus or Pamukkale known as "Cotton castle" - a vast white cliff side with scallop shaped basins of water and frozen waterfalls. It looks as if it's made out of snow, cloud or balls of cotton and is known to many as the 8th wonder of the world.
The 5 or 12 island boat trips are a great way to spend a day out.The scenery is fantastic and a most relaxing way to top up your tan.
All trips can be booked locally and are very well priced.Normally you will be picked up and dropped off at the villa.
Don't miss the weekly markets and remember to haggle!!
