The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Turkey is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited regions, largely because of its location at the intersection of Asia and Europe. The first major empire was that of the Hittites, from the 18th to the 13th century BC. After falling to Alexander the Great in 334 BC, the area was divided into small kingdoms, but succumbed to Rome by the 1st century BC. In AD 324 the Roman Emperor Constantine I chose Constantinople (now Istanbul), as the capital of the Roman Empire.
The rise of the Ottoman Empire after 1299 led to mass conversions to Islam, and created an Islam-based rather than a Turkish-based identity. The Empire interacted with both Eastern and Western cultures throughout its 631-year history, and was among the world's most powerful political entities in the 16th and 17th Centuries. But it fell after the First World War, when the victorious Allied Forces partitioned it through the Treaty of Sèvres.
Soon after, the Turkish War of Independence resulted in the birth of a Turkish state that formally abolished the office of the Sultan. The Treaty of Lausanne of 1923 led to the international recognisation of the sovereignty of the newly formed Republic of Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's became the country's first president, and his political, economic, legal and cultural reforms did much to modernise the country.
In 2005, Turkey officially became a candidate country to join the European Union as a full member, having been an associate member since 1964.
Hisaronu / Central Hisaronu area
A good natured, family friendly resort, attractively laid out along a twisting, bar-and-restaurant lined main street, Hisaronu offers just enough excitement, with a character altogether calmer than the mega-resorts of the Aegean. Turkey's Mediterranean coast is a popular choice for those attracted to glorious beaches, ruggedly beautiful landscapes and interesting towns. Holidays to Hisaronu offer everything you need for a relaxed family holiday. And, should you wish to explore a little further, the beautiful seaside resort of Oludeniz with its blue lagoon and crescent beach is just a short drive away. Hisaronu's main street is a shopper's delight, with stores selling everything from fake carpets to real ones.
Good value restaurants mean that cheap holidays to Hisaronu offer a week or two in the Turkish sun even for those on a budget. The town's proud of its friendly, genuinely warm welcome - you'll be treated like a long-lost friend at the resort's good range of pubs and Turkish-themed showbars. But, a word of warning - when you start belly-dancing, you know it's time to go home. If you're looking for a last minute break then Hisaronu is the place to come.
There are plenty of activities to choose from including Jeep Safari, Scuba diving, Paragliding, micro-lighting, quad biking and white water rafting just to mention a few. There are also numerous local trips and excursions including Kaya Koy, Tlos, Saklikent Gorge, Xanthos and Pammukale.
During the summer months there are numerous local dolmus (mini buses) that can be stopped anywhere on route, to the beach, Fethiye or further afield. A hire car, although not essential, is recommended to explore the local area
All the activities, trips and Car Hire can be prebooked through our agents.
A Market is held in Hisaronu every Monday and an even larger one in Fethiye on Tuesday's where you can haggle with the stallholders and hopefully grab yourself a bargain.
