The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
This is probably the easiest area of Turkey to get excited about. From Marmaris to Antalya the coastline is gorgeous, the weather is reliably excellent and there are heaps of things to see and do. The Turquoise coast at its finest has become the destination of first choice for many first time and repeat visitors to Turkey. It is also, of course, the area that shows the highest level of tourist development.
This region corresponds to ancient Lycia and the Lycians knew a thing or two about designing cities that would degrade gracefully. Between Fethiye and Antalya there are a score of sites worth seeing, Lycian , Dorian, Roman, whatever. Highlights include Myra, Simena, and just about everything in the Xanthos valley, not forgetting the magical site at Olympos.
The key to enjoying all the delights that this area offers is mobility and if you can hire a car or just get on the myriad of small buses running up and down the coast, the effort and expense will be repaid.
DO consider visiting out of season if you can. Anytime from April to October is fine and the spring in particular is lovely down here. In the autumn the water is still warm and you should find everything easier and cheaper outside of the July/August rush. You can visit Patara, Kas, Fethiye, Oludeniz, Kekova, Gombe, Kaputas Beach, Saklikent, Islamlar ( famous with trout farms ) and lots of historical Lycia cities as Patara, Letoon, Tlos so on.
Ovacik is a quiet and rural area with splendid views of the surrounding pine clad mountains. Life here is peaceful, calm and traditional. The air is usually cooler and fresher than at sea level, which can be very welcome at the height of the summer.
It is a very beautiful village popular with families and people who like private accommodation whilst retaining access to many varied local amenities. A short stroll presents a range of restaurants and traditional tavernas serving cuisines to cater for all tastes. Ovacik is close to the popular beach at Olu-Deniz with it's famous fresh water lagoon. The four kilometre journey will take no more than 20 minutes by dolmus bus. There are many varied attractions which will appeal to all tastes. These can all be booked locally at any of the many outlets along the village streets. Some of the most popular include: • A day trip across the water to the Greek island of Rhodes• Tandem paragliding from the 6000 feet high summit of Babadag down to the beach below (you can see them from the villa whilst laying by the pool)• Jeep safari through some breathtakingly beautiful and contrasting countryside• Being pampered in a Turkish bath or a mud bath at Dalyan• A trip to Turtle beach• Quad biking through the local countryside and ancient haunting Greek village of Kaya• A fun filled day at the aquapark• Sightseeing from the air via a microlight. For those that want a more active night life, the nearby town of Hisaronu provides this with it's crowded bars, bustling restaurants and dance clubs.
We also love Fethiye. It is a lively Turkish town of around 100,000 inhabitants. It is the perfect mix of of a sophisticated and ethnic life for living and for holidays.
The town has area called Paspatur which is a bazaar area catering for the needs of all tourists with real atmosphere. The main street and all side streets are full of big and small traders in everything you can possibly imagine. Right in the centre of town is a combined permanent Fish and fruit and veg market where the bargains are incredible. You can buy your fish or shellfish in the market and one of the restaurants surrounding the market will create a delicious meal for you for around £2. Tuesday is the big market in Fethiye. Maybe 500 to 700 traders all selling their wares. Big bargains but please haggle sensibly and compare prices before you buy. Great atmosphere here also. Originally Fethiye was known as Termessos and there are still remains and an amphitheater from the Lycian period. Some 3 to 4000 ex-pats live in and around Fethiye permanently with this number doubling at least during spring to autumn. Fethiye must be one of the best sailing centres anywhere in the world with steady winds, crystal clear water and the most incredible scenery. A walk down to the Ece Saray Hotel for a cocktail in their bar overlooking the Marina is worth a visit to view the luxury yachts and try and spot a visiting celebrity!
