The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
There are at least 300 days of sunshine, in this part of Turkey, and the area is surrounded by green pine forests and the deep blue Mediterranean sea.
The Turquoise Coast, or Lycia Region, of Turkey offers astonishingly beautiful scenery - from idyllic coves and beaches, bordering on a deep turquoise, crystal clear sea, to spectacular, majestic mountains and tranquil pine forests.
The area around Fethiye is one of Turkey’s most beautiful, offering a perfect mix of beach resorts and mountain scenery with small rural villages. This harbour town, with the ancient name of Telmessos, is populated by circa 70,000 people. It is surrounded by turquoise seas, with a beautiful mountainous backdrop. Dry, long, hot summers and short, warm, rainy winters are climatic characteristics of Fethiye. The temperature, which is around 86-105F (30-40 C), during the summertime is usually above 50F (10 C ) in the wintertime; this means that you can comfortably swim in these turquoise coloured waters for nine months of the year! The town, itself, provides everything from a rich and varied holiday to a great living experience. This region is the heart of ancient Lycia and host to a number of historic sites, amongst which are Kaunos, Tlos, Pinara, Letoon, Xanthos and Patara; natural beauties are also close by, such as Saklikent. The famous beach of Oludeniz is within easy reach and also provides great shopping and dining out, plus every kind of water sports imaginable plus the best paragliding in Turkey - to list but a few of the unique features of this region. Furthermore, on Tuesdays in nearby Fethiye, there is a weekly bazaar, which is the largest in the area.
Fethiye is known as the shining sun of the region. There are many festivals in the area, such as the worldwide famous Air Sports Festival in Olu Deniz, water sports festival, traditional folk dance and song festivals, Motocross championships and festivals - and these are just a few of the many activities to see and do.
The perfect location for the perfect holiday!
The resort villages of Hisaronu and Ovacik nestle between pine clad mountains on a plateau 1500 feet above sea level, under Mount Babadag. Hisaronu began as a farming village, until being discovered by back-packing holidaymakers in the 1960's. It is now a well managed and lively resort with a wealth of restaurants and bars, catering for all tastes, budgets and ages. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, as well as traditional style Turkish cuisine served in a variety of lokantas, you’ll also find food from around the world, including Chinese, Indian, and even English cuisine, to reflect the tastes of the many international visitors. The people here are very friendly and will make you feel most welcome.
During the summer months, many well stocked mini markets are dotted throughout this area, catering for all your basic needs. Hisaronu has an abundance of shops, where you can find all the fake designer gear you could possibly wish for(!), many ATM's, plus both doctors and chemists - should they be required.
There is a local market on Monday, in Hisaronu, where you will find many bargains. On Tuesday there is a huge market in Fethiye, selling everything you can possibly think of. A visit here is well worth the effort, just to admire the abundance of fresh fruit and veg stalls, if nothing else. Once you've had your fill of shopping. why not stop and rest your feet at one of the many cafes, for a freshly made pancake or a tasty chicken / lamb kebab - all washed down by freshly squeezed orange juice!
Easily accessible from Ovacik / Hisaronu by regular and low-price minibus (dolmus), is Oludeniz, undoubtedly one of the most spectacular beaches in all of Turkey, found nestling at the foot of Babadag mountains. A wide bay of coarse white sand, with crystal clear blue sea, gently lapping the shore, curving round to meet the natural sheltered Blue Lagoon which, with its calm sheltered waters, makes it ideal for children.
Oludeniz offers many beach-side cafes and restaurants plus all the usual watersports, paracending, pedalo's, banana boats and you can, if you dare, take part in tandem paragliding - descending from the peak of the Babadag Mountains, landing some 40 mins later on the beach at Oludeniz. Alternatively, you can just relax and sunbathe - watching the world go by! The ultimate beach resort!
For the beach-lover: The stunning lagoon of Oludeniz is one of the best in the World, or you can join the locals at the nearby pebble beach of Gemiler.
For culture vultures: Head to Fethiye Museum and check out the theatre of Telmessos, built in the early Roman period, which was only excavated in 1994.
For thrills: Oludeniz is one of the best places for the Paragliding in the world. The Dalaman river is good for white-water rafting and Fethiye is also a big centre for scuba diving.
For Children: The beaches of the Blue Lagoon are gently shelving and great for children; older children will enjoy the pedalos on the lagoon itself. There are also Aqua parks in Calis and Ovacik.
For bargain-hunters: Fethiye’s Tuesday market is the largest in the area, and there are also smaller markets in Hisaronu on Mondays and Calis on Sundays.
For night owls: Hisaronu is probably the liveliest - with a few good dance bars, which stay open till the early hours.
Getting away from the crowds: The stone village of Kaya is quite literally deserted. If you set off early in the morning, before the sun is too high, it makes a pleasant walk from Hisaronu. Stop for lunch in one of the village restaurants nearby.
Eating out: A wide choice of Turkish and international cuisine is available in all the resorts, but a visit to the area would be incomplete without sampling some locally caught fresh fish.
Great days out: Visit the ancient Lycian city of Tlos and marvel at the ruins that overlook the breathtaking Xanthos Valley, including an Ottoman fortress, Lycian tombs, a theatre and a bath complex.
