The White House at Birdlake
About the home
The White House comprises a decidedly contemporary villa inspired by the landscape. The sloping site leading down to the lake has been used to maximum advantage. Opened in 2008, the White House at Birdlake is situated at the end of a quiet unpaved road just 10 minutes away from Hikkaduwa town.
The property was designed by architect Rihan Peruma and the simplicity of his design with lofty, light filled interiors, enhanced by contemporary furniture and the bold use of colour creates an environment which is a joy to encounter. High ceilings and natural air flow keep the villas cool sustained by the natural cement floors.
Picture windows give uninterrupted views of the lake which can be reached at the foot of the gardens just beyond the private pool. The White House offers a welcome change to the colonial style of beach villas which adorn the coastline. The property sleeps 6 adults and 2 children on pull out mattresses.

Further details indoors:
"A building can only be understood by moving around and through it and by experiencing the modulation and feel of the spaces one moves through -- from the outside into verandahs, then rooms, -- the view from these spaces into others, views through to the landscape beyond, and from outside the building, views back through rooms and into inner rooms and courts." Geoffrey Bawa.
The villa has 3 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. The master bedroom has a cement bath tub which overlooks the lake and the second bedroom has its own balcony. The living room is comfortably furnished and is linked to the dining room by an indoor fish pond. The large teak dining table comfortably seats 8 and enjoys magnificent views of the lake.
The kitchen is fully equipped and has its own walled herb and spice garden. The villas have been exquisitely furnished with a combination of contemporary Sri Lankan furniture and textiles and carpets from Asia to add drama throughout.
The property sleeps 6 adults and two children on pull out mattresses.
Further details outdoors:
The villa has an outdoor option to suit every occasion and mood. Outside the dining area, facing the lake, is a covered verandah with comfortable rattan furniture, silk scatter cushions reflect the colours of the earth, water and grass.
Outside the kitchen is an outdoor eating area with a large round cement table and wrought iron chairs.
The pool is linked to these two outdoor areas by a lawn. The rooftop terrace with its terracotta tiles and lounge chairs is a perfect spot to sunbathe during the day or to watch the sunset over the lake in the evening.

Enquire nowThe Sri Lanka Southern Coast region
The southern coastal belt is the most popular among the tourists and comes to life mainly from November through April when the sea becomes calm and the sky becomes blue. May, June and July are probably the hottest months of the year and a great time to hit the beach and soak in the sun.
There are numerous resorts, bars, restaurants and top end hotels offering every luxury imaginable strung along the coastal road from Colombo to Galle and beyond. Choose a lazy day at the beach or an energetic holiday. Equally, shun the vibrant night-life for a romantic meal watching the sun go down over the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka offers something for everyone. It is a place to which you will want to keep coming back.
Places of Interest
"Brief Gardens" - 70kms from Colombo is a wonderful estate, owned by a former Sri Lankan artist, Bevis Bawa, who lived there and died 1992. The estate and park have been bequeathed to his gardener/ servant, who still owns the place and gives interesting tours.
Ambalangoda - 86 km from Colombo has a beautiful white sandy beach. The town is famous as the home of devil dancing and mask making. Devil dancing is an important part of the culture of Sri Lanka. Colourful masks worn during traditional dance are carved out of soft wood and brightly painted. Handloom products such as batiks and hand-woven cottons are also found here.
Hikkaduwa - located 98 km south of Colombo, is one of the most popular beach resorts of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's only marine sanctuary is located here. It is an ideal place for nature lovers with its abundant corals and tropical fishes. Hikkaduwa has something to offer to everyone-coral for snorkellers, waves for surfers and white pristine beaches for those who want to relax and enjoy sun and sand.
Galle - located 116 km to the south of Colombo on the south west corner of the island, was founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the magnificent Dutch fort is the most popular attraction of the town. The 300 year old Dutch atmosphere is still very much alive around the fort and amidst its many historical buildings. The beautiful beach of Unawatuna is just 6km south east of the city centre.
Unawatuna, near Galle is a beautiful wide curving golden beach. The beach has been acclaimed amongst 12 best beaches in the world. There is a reef protecting the beach, which makes it safe for bathing.
The Hikkaduwa / Nalagasdeniya area
The first area to be developed for tourism, Hikkaduwa is 98 km's south of Colombo and it is doubtlessly one of the most famous beach spots in Sri Lanka. There is an equally varied choice of beach and sea for tourists. Coral for snorkellers, waves for body and board surfers and a good wide strip of sand, backed by cafes if you just want to sit back and relax feeling the sea breeze.
The reef, which runs parallel to the shore and is only a few metres below the water, can be explored with snorkel and fins, or in a glass-bottomed boat. There are several wrecks in the area which offer interesting dives. Scuba equipment and the services of licensed instructions are on hire from PADI centres.
Hikkaduwa has a wide range of hotels, bars and restaurants as well as a local market and shops. After the 2004 tsunami, Hikkaduwa has developed as a centre for tailoring as many locals were given sewing machines. It also has number of handicraft, art and gem shops.
On the beach about 2 kms north of Hikkaduwa is a very small private Turtle Research Centre, which works to protect this endangered species. Turtle eggs selected for hatching & progressive stages of the development of turtles can be seen here.
At the end July- begining August - Hikkaduwa has its own beach Carnival. Trains:
Galle is the main stop for the express trains from Colombo running 5-6 times / day which takes 2 hrs, some do also stop at Hikkaduwa.
There is a train running from Hikkaduwa to Kandy at 3pm each afternoon and to Anuradhapura at 11 am each morning. You are advised to book ahead to secure a 2nd class ticket for a 5 and 8 hr journey respectively.
