After three months of planning a much anticipated family get together, we arrived at Hikka Villa on a sunny day in September. We had driven down from Colombo in a rented car, partly along the highway and partly along Galle Road. The drive was beautiful, surrounded, as we were, by lush green vegetation on one side and accompanied by the weaving blue coastline on the other. Hikka Villa is just off the Galle Road as you enter Hikkaduwa. The villa is large and spacious with a pretty garden and a clean and well kept pool. There was plenty of space for the four of us . Renovations were in progress to add ensuite bathrooms to two of the rooms but held up during our stay. The owner was there to greet us and let us know about the Villas's amenities and to introduce us to the cook, Lal and the tour guide Chat, a friendly and informative person. We made ourselves comfortable in no time at all and were set to discover the south of Sri Lanka from this very convenient location. With excellent Sri Lankan food made by Lal, who was a mine of knowledge about local vegetables and fish,we were able to taste authentic cuisine. Every morning we would discuss the menu for dinner and breakfast next day and he would buy the required ingredients, keeping an accurate account of all expenses. Hikka Villa is ideally placed to to explore Galle, ( the fort area is fascinating) , Unawatuna, ( for its marvellous beach) Ambalangoda ( for the mask museum) Kosgoda ( turtle hatchery) and Bentota. ( Brief Garden). With the indoor gym, a beautiful balcony to laze in, a little reading corner and the pool there is plenty to keep one occupied in the Villa as well. Hikka Villa introduced us to lovely Sri Lanka, with its friendly and kind people, its tropical greenery , its fabulous food and its gentle culture. We cannot wait to return! |
