Southern Province region
The southern coastal belt is the most popular among the tourists and comes to life mainly from November through April when the sea becomes calm and the sky becomes blue. May, June and July are probably the hottest months of the year and a great time to hit the beach and soak in the sun.?
There are numerous resorts, bars, restaurants and top end hotels offering every luxury imaginable strung along the coastal road from Colombo to Galle and beyond. Choose a lazy day at the beach or an energetic holiday. Equally, shun the vibrant night-life for a romantic meal watching the sun go down over the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka offers something for everyone. It is a place to which you will want to keep coming back.
Places of Interest?
"Brief Gardens" - 70kms from Colombo is a wonderful estate, owned by a former Sri Lankan artist, Bevis Bawa, who lived there and died 1992. The estate and park have been bequeathed to his gardener/ servant, who still owns the place and gives interesting tours.
Ambalangoda - 86 km from Colombo has a beautiful white sandy beach. The town is famous as the home of devil dancing and mask making. Devil dancing is an important part of the culture of Sri Lanka. Colourful masks worn during traditional dance are carved out of soft wood and brightly painted. Handloom products such as batiks and hand-woven cottons are also found here.??
Hikkaduwa - located 98 km south of Colombo, is one of the most popular beach resorts of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's only marine sanctuary is located here. It is an ideal place for nature lovers with its abundant corals and tropical fishes. Hikkaduwa has something to offer to everyone-coral for snorkelers, waves for surfers and white pristine beaches for those who want to relax and enjoy sun and sand.??
Galle - located 116 km to the south of Colombo on the south west corner of the island, was founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the magnificent Dutch fort is the most popular attraction of the town. The 300 year old Dutch atmosphere is still very much alive around the fort and amidst its many historical buildings. The beautiful beach of Unawatuna is just 6km south east of the city centre.??
Unawatuna, near Galle is a beautiful wide curving golden beach. The beach has been acclaimed amongst 12 best beaches in the world. There is a reef protecting the beach, which makes it safe for bathing.
Things to Do while you are in Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwas beach is a heaven for sun-seekers and is one of the most popular in Sri Lanka, with its idyllic white sands and swaying palms, lively beach bars and colourful coral reefs.
The resort is a major surfing centre, and attracts many to its shores, thanks to the reliable surf seen here, especially during the main season from November to April.
The waters around Hikkaduwa offer exceptional conditions for diving and snorkeling, and boast a stunning coral reef close to the shore and an excellent range of subtropical fish. "A dream come true"
After three months of planning a much anticipated family get together, we arrived at Hikka Villa on a sunny day in September. We had driven down from Colombo in a rented car, partly along the highway and partly along Galle Road. The drive was beautiful, surrounded, as we were, by lush green vegetation on one side and accompanied by the weaving blue coastline on the other. Hikka Villa is just off the Galle Road as you enter Hikkaduwa. The villa is large and spacious with a pretty garden and a clean and well kept pool. There was plenty of space for the four of us . Renovations were in progress to add ensuite bathrooms to two of the rooms but held up during our stay. The owner was there to greet us and let us know about the Villas's amenities and to introduce us to the cook, Lal and the tour guide Chat, a friendly and informative person. We made ourselves comfortable in no time at all and were set to discover the south of Sri Lanka from this very convenient location. With excellent Sri Lankan food made by Lal, who was a mine of knowledge about local vegetables and fish,we were able to taste authentic cuisine. Every morning we would discuss the menu for dinner and breakfast next day and he would buy the required ingredients, keeping an accurate account of all expenses. Hikka Villa is ideally placed to to explore Galle, ( the fort area is fascinating) , Unawatuna, ( for its marvellous beach) Ambalangoda ( for the mask museum) Kosgoda ( turtle hatchery) and Bentota. ( Brief Garden). With the indoor gym, a beautiful balcony to laze in, a little reading corner and the pool there is plenty to keep one occupied in the Villa as well. Hikka Villa introduced us to lovely Sri Lanka, with its friendly and kind people, its tropical greenery , its fabulous food and its gentle culture. We cannot wait to return!
Thank You for staying with us. Hope to see you again. Regards Prasad

"Huge villa, great caring staff, highly recommended."
My husband our 2 young children and myself stayed in Hikkavilla for just over a week during February 2012. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and can wholeheartedly recommend it. The villa is huge and would make a good party house for a large group. The Internet connection was excellent and Sky TV is available, but I recommend you request it when booking so the owner can ensure the necessary channels are available at your arrival. There is a team of English speaking staff on hand to assist in your every need should you wish: Lal the cook/housekeeper, Chat the travel guide and Chanaka the owner. If you are able to hire Lal, the cook/housekeeper, I urge you to do so. Lal can cook all manner of foreign dishes, but we preferred a more local menu at which he excelled. Lal is a very honest, quiet and kind man who will do his very best to make your stay so much more relaxed and trouble free. If you give him a menu request for the following day and some money he will shop for ingredients and ensure your meals are ready at the time you specify. Lal always gave us change from his shopping trips; his integrity cannot be faulted. On comparison we found Lal’s excellent cooking to be far better value than eating out every night. I have returned to England with recipes and instructions from Lal’s kitchen. Hikkavilla is located a little out from the town centre and beach front, but this is a real bonus if you want the ability to retreat to your own sanctuary. Chat or Lal can arrange for a tuk-tuk to taxi you around, but we found it convenient to pop down to the local shop to use the excellent tuk-tuk driver based there. After a long day sightseeing or swimming with turtles it was a delight to return to the peace of our very quiet private garden and pool. We got a lot of pleasure from swimming whilst surrounded by coconut palms (complete with adorable monkeys), banana palms, figs, huge curry leaf trees and a whole host of other exotic flora and fauna. The children searched for the resident Chameleon and touched every bit of sleeping fern they could find (ask Lal to point it out to you). It is wise to arrange for Chat, the very attentive travel guide, to meet you at arrivals in the airport. The journey to Hikkaduwa is beautiful, but lengthy and you will be glad of his very comfortable air-conditioned people carrier. Chat is an excellent choice for arranging day trips as he knows the local area well. He is truly fantastic with children and we frequently used him to look after our daughter when we were all out and about together (she adored him and misses him still). Chat is a young man who will do his best for you, but will not give you the hard sell if you are not interested. However, if you plan a longer tour with Chat I suggest you are very specific about your needs. If you require a certain number of beds in a family room, or a room in the best part of a hotel, ensure you are clear in your request. We were perhaps a little less clear than we should have been and assumed Chat would get it right every time. He was sometimes a little off the mark, but that could have been avoided with better discussion. Chat is very eager to get it right for you. (However, do bear in mind that accommodation in Colombo is in very short supply, so if you want a decent standard room ensure you give Chat plenty of notice and be prepared to pay high room rates). Once we had returned home we continued to be impressed by the care the villa owners showed us. My daughter had left a bag in Colombo. Chanaka collected the bag and posted it back to England without charge to us. I think that illustrates the kindness afforded travellers in Sri Lanka and at Hikkavilla in particular.
Thanks for the feedback.
