About this location
The Devon region
You can't visit the West Country without eating a pasty, enjoying a cream tea or drinking cider (or freshly pressed apple juice). There is great debate about Pasties, who has the best Devon or Cornwall. In fact at a recent national award ceremony for the best pasty even they could not decide between Polmorla Pasties in Bude and Endacotts in Okehampton. You can decide who should be the real champion.
Some of Devon's most beautiful countryside lies around the traditional market towns of Holsworthy and Hatherleigh. This is Ruby Country, real Devon, off the beaten track . If you're looking for a family holiday to remember or a romantic weekend escape, Ruby Country is the place to be. Picturesque villages, winding lanes, rolling landscapes, with easy access to the dramatic atlantic coastline, make this an ideal base for bird watching, fishing, cycling, rambling, horse riding, watersports, archery or just plain relaxing.
Nestled between Dartmoor to the South, Bodmin Moor to the South West and Exmoor to the North, Ruby Country displays the colours and textures of ancient woodlands and culm grasslands. Shaped by the effects of water draining off the moors and the vast catchment area of the Torridge River, Ruby Country is the result of its people, their traditional way of life and farming practices as well as the effects those have had on nature, leaving a truly spectacular landscape to enjoy. The remote and dispersed population of Ruby Country, causes little if any light pollution so that the night skies are clearer and sharper making one of the best areas for observing the stars and planets.
Lakeview Rise is perfectly positioned for touring the whole of Devon and North Cornwall with attractions to suit all tastes.
Local activities range from Fishing (Highampton Trout lakes and Fishing Elderado), You can also enjoy fishing at Roadford and Tamar Lakes – or their wide range of water-sports. An archery centre is within walking distance, as well as immediate access to cycle paths and route marked walks. There is excellent wildlife around the property, bird watching, and general flora and fauna (everything from a family of buzzards to Deer nearby).
Hatherleigh has a very interesting Tuesday market, where you can buy anything from a Cow in the cattle market to local fruit and veg. Hatherleigh is lovely, with an award winning butchers, bakers, pottery and Iron mongers… with several good pubs. In the Autumn there is a not to be missed Tar Barrel festival and carnival, which is an absolutely brilliant taste of traditional Devon fun and frolics.
Okehampton (or Oke to the locals) is well worth a visit; with its romantic Castle, Steam train and Simmons Park. Oke is called the gateway to Dartmoor, so a great place to explore the moor. We highly recommend the excellent butchers, bakers, there is an interesting farmers market, 3 supermarkets and good overall shopping.
Bude is a popular destination, which offers great surfing all year round. For something a lot quieter, just around the corner the spectacular Sandy Mouth Bay, with its breath taking views, is a National Trust beach (at certain times of the year you can walk between Bude and Sandy Mouth – but make sure you get the tide times right).
Eating out: you are in Ruby Country, which is famous for its Grass Reared Beef. A 10 minute stroll is the Golden Inn. Iddesleigh's 'Duke of York' is famous locally with the landlord rearing his own beef and lamb. If you're heading to Bude, why not stop in at the Bickford Arms as you pass through Brandis Corner (a gastro pub, Devon style). The Camra Pub of the Year 'Tom Cobley Tavern' in Spreyton is just 30 mins away. The landlord was also a butcher and the steak is amazing.
If you are looking for something else to occupy the kids there are numerous adventure theme parks nearby which provide excellent fun in all weathers, Creally is a firm favourite, a bit closer to home are the Big Sheep, the Milky Way to name but a few, Bude has a great soft-play park and go-carts at Harlequinns.
