The East Anglia region
Norfolk is renowned for its tranquillity, attracting birdwatchers and those seeking solitude. The Norfolk Broads are an expansive area of navigable waterways, lakes, marshes and nature reserves. Some of the villages in Suffolk have changed little since the area was a medieval trade centre, adding to the picture book feel to the landscape. The Stour Valley was a favourite scene for the great English painter Constable, who loved the flat and mellow landscape of the area.
LATEST NEWS March 2012: Hickling now has a village shop!
The Pleasure Boat pub has added a small shop and tea room selling newspapers, bread, milk, meats, tinned food, sweets and toiletries. The pub is a pleasant 15min stroll down a single track lane, with views over Hickling Broad. yes we still have the Tescos at Stalham, but you can't beat a pleasant walk. And, they even serve ale :)
The village of Hickling is on the edge of Hickling Broad, which is the largest of the Broads and is popular for boating and windsurfing. The village has two pubs serving food and further facilities are a short drive away in Stalham. Cyclists will love the quiet lanes, with a number of places offering cycle hire. Lovely sandy beaches can be found at Waxham and Sea Palling, which are just three miles away, and there is easy access to the whole of Norfolk's rich and diverse coastline. The area is a haven for ornithologists, nature lovers and walkers, with beautiful countryside all around.
Hickling has a brand new community centre (search online for Hickling Barn) with rural cinama screenings, keep fit classes and events throughout the year - visitors to Goleby's Cottage are welcome.
