The East Anglia region
Norfolk is renowned for its tranquillity, boasting unspoilt coastline, beautiful countryside and towns and villages full of history and charm. The Norfolk Broads, a National Park is an expansive area of navigable waterways, lakes, marshes and nature reserves that are home to a wealth of wildlife. The area can be explored by boat, cyclying or walking at a pace to suit you. There are a wide range of attractions within an easy drive, including stately homes, gardens and attractions for all the family.
The village of Hickling is on the edge of Hickling Broad, which is the largest of the Broads and is popular for boating and windsurfing. The village is welcoming and friendly and great for families and dog owners with quiet lanes and 2 pubs that serve food. Further facilities can be found just a short drive away in Stalham. Cyclists will love the quiet, flat lanes, with a number of places offering cycle hire. Lovely sandy beaches can be found at Waxham and Sea Palling and resident seals can be viewed at Horsey. The area is a haven for ornithologists, nature lovers and walkers, with beautiful countryside all around.
Hickling Nature Reserve run by Norfolk Wildlife Trust is home to the chinese water deer, red deer and otters. It is also the perfect location for bird watching. Birds you can expect to see are the common crane, bittern, march harrier, bearded tit, cetti's warbler, barn owls and king fisher as well as local specialities - the swallow tail butterfly and Norfolk hawker dragonfly.
Other local activities include horse riding in the village, cycling, walking and fishing.
Hickling has an active community centre (search online for Hickling Barn) with rural cinama screenings, keep fit classes and events throughout the year - visitors to Goleby's Cottage are welcome.
The Pleasure Boat pub has a small shop and tea room selling newspapers, bread, milk, meats, tinned food, sweets and toiletries. The pub is a pleasant 15min stroll down a single track lane, with views over Hickling Broad. Stalham is 2.5 miles away with its high street of local shops, butchers, take aways and a Tesco.

"Lovely cottage and great location to explore Norfolk"
Had a great weekend at Goleby's cottage. Nice cottage with everything (and more) you would need and we were greeted with a very thoughtful basket of goodies. It was our first trip to Norfolk and we thought the location was perfect to explore. Lots to see in the area including the Seals on the local beach, and we really enjoyed the village pub.

Wow! What a perfect, comfortable, inviting, quaint cottage set in a beautiful village amongst the Broads. There is absolutely everything you could possibly need to make this cottage what it is, exceptional! We have stayed in many cottages across the country for Christmas but Goleby's cottage is by far, the best. The owners (who were most helpful throughout, providing lots of information about everything in the area) had very kindly laid on little Christmas presents for us and our dog and decorated the cottage beautifully, the roaring fire and underfloor heating made it just that little bit more special too. The local pub (Greyhound) about 100m away was also very welcoming and a traditional country pub with great staff and food. We will be returning to the cottage this year hopefully and can not wait to get back there.

"Cosy home from home!"
This cottage totally exceeded our expectations. It was wonderfully homely, welcoming, warm and very, very comfortable and cosy. The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need, every day we exclaimed at how well equipped the cottage was, it is literally like being at home except it is possibly more well equipped than my home!! We arrived to find tea, coffee, milk, lovely m&s shortbread biscuits, muffins and a bottle of mulled wine for us to enjoy. Such a treat and made us feel really happy and welcome. Lindt chocolates on the pillows with a sprig of lavender was a really sweet touch as well. Fuel for the gorgeous real fire was generously supplied and the living room was so cosy with a real decorated Christmas tree and beautiful Christmas decorations as well! I honestly cannot recommend this cottage enough, the owners Sean and Annie really care that you have an enjoyable stay, and called us during the stay to make sure we were happy - a really nice touch! I have to mention the amazing underfloor heating which kept us toasty and warm as well. The beds were really comfy and luxurious, the bedding and towels were gorgeous, it was like being in a hotel!! The sweet cottage garden is totally enclosed, and absolutely perfect for bringing a dog which we did. Lots of fabulous birdlife in the garden to watch from the kitchen window too. We loved the local beaches - horsey beach and sea palling beach are extraordinary! Horsey beach plays host to a seal colony with baby seals and their mothers all over the beach!! Truly an unforgettable experience. In addition the excellent wi-Fi, tv with DVD player and huge kitchen table to do jigsaws and play games on were a bonus. The kitchen is of a remarkably high standard, huge fridge, double oven, hob, washer dryer, dishwasher and every utensil, pot and pan you could need including baking things! It is with a certain hesitation that I recommend this cottage because I don't want everyone to book it for the next year as I want to come back!! We have never stayed at a cottage that ticked so many boxes before, you could not ask for more!

"Lovely cottage on beautiful Broads"
Our first visit to the Broads and hopefully more to follow. Nice, well equipped, clean cottage in excellent village location. The owners were a pleasure to deal with. Thoughtful and attentive throughout and welcoming to our 2 westies. There are plenty of dog friendly places of interest and pubs. We enjoyed the RAF Radar Museum and the Museum of the Broads. Great walks on Horsey Beach and Horsey Windmill. Norfolk Wildlife Trust have a site near the cottage. The sunset cruise on Wednesday evening was the highlight of our week. Particularly as we were the only ones who had booked and it was a lovely evening. The guide was knowledgeable about the birds, wildlife and history of the Broads. On our following visit we heard and saw Bittern . The best meals we had were at the Vernon Arms at Southrepps. Good food at the Swan at Stalham, though the decor not very inspiring

"We fell in love with Goleby's Cottage and Hickling!!"
We couldn't recommend this cottage and location enough. Cottage is fantastic and Sean and Anne the owners have thought of everything and more to make your visit extremely comfortable. They go 'that extra mile' in what they provide in the cottage to make all the family feel welcome and were very happy for me to contact them should I have any questions. As a family we returned feeling very relaxed, and didn't really want to come home. Hickling itself is a lovely village and the local pub is a two minute walk along the road where good food and drink are served daily and guests are made to feel welcome. There is plenty to do around and about Hickling and in Norfolk. We could definitely have done with a longer stay .

"Tranquil escape with easy access to everything"
Hickling is a beautiful quiet village and is a great location for a relaxing break. The nearby pubs are proper English pubs with great real ales and great food. The roads around the cottage are quiet country lanes and this was perfect for our 7 and 10 year old children to cycle around. Hickling broad is a short drive or a walk away. We took the Wildlife boat trip and climbed the observation tower. There is nothing quite like the Norfolk Broads - a totally unique beautiful boating experience. Goleby's cottage is a lovely place to stay. The owners really could not do enough to help us familiarise ourselves with the local area. They contacted us in advance and sent emails with lots of good tips and recommendations for our interests. The cottage itself has lots of brochures and leaflets for local attractions. Our stay coincided with the London 2012 olympics and we enjoyed a trip into London via Norwich. When we mentioned this plan to the owners they again sent recommendations for trains and parking etc - brilliant! We spent a day at Great Yarmouth pleasure beach and bought the armband (£19.50 for the day) for our children. This gives unlimited access to all the rides. Unlike other fun parks, there were no queues for any of the rides so the value for money was exceptional. They would have stayed all night if we let them. Really enjoyable stay in a great cottage in a great location.

We had a wonderful time, at home far from home. A wonderful cottage, even more beautiful than in the pictures, well maintained, clean, excellently equiped, friendly neighbors, great pub around the corner... All wonderful and only topped by the friendlyness of the owners. All nicely prepared for the whole family! And all that in a great location in the nicest spot in the Broads!

"Cosy cottage, wonderful welcome and an enclosed garden for our dog."
This cottage is loved by its owners and it shows. Chocolates and the welcome basket was a lovely touch and very appreciated. Grest location with access to both the coast and the broads what more could you want. A beautifully appointed home from home, we will be back.

"Can't wait for our next stay at Goleby's Cottage!"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Goleby's Cottage. The cottage has been beautifully restored and is thoughtfully decorated, making sure you have everything you need during your stay and even things you didn't think you needed! The location is great as well, with lovely walks at Hickling Broad and the nearby beaches - needless to say Charlie (our Jack Russell) - loved it. There are lots of options for eating out nearby if you don't feel like cooking, we'd highly recommend the Greyhound pub in the village. Looking forward to our next stay in a couple of months time.

"Lovely welcome to a gorgeous country cottage"
We arrived at night in the dark which was a shame because we had to wait til morning to fully appreciate the stunning approach to this wonderful country cottage. However we were met by a lovely warm cottage thanks to the owners thoughtfulness along with a little welcome pack for us and our dogs! Bodie, Samson & Doyle all say thank you for their biscuits. The cottage is very well maintained and it provides everything you will need and more! It is very cosy, comfortable and clean. It is located in a wonderful little village which has a fantastic local pub which serves great food. We spent several fun hours there. There are splendid beaches only a few miles away and Winterton beach and it's resident seals are a must see. Sean & Annie (the owners) were very nice to deal with and were very accommodating allowing us to take our 3 dogs with us. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough if you are looking for a warm welcome at a cosy country cottage in a beautiful location.
