The Northern England / Northumberland region

Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park.
Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Hexham / Warden area
Originally the site of a fort that dates back to the Iron Age, Warden now plays host to the Boatside Inn, which offers an excellent choice of freshly prepared food. For those who want to immerse themselves in Northumbria’s colourful past, Warden is located within easy access of attractions such as Hadrian’s Wall and other Roman remains or even day-trips to Anwick Castle and Gardens. If you prefer your attractions to have a modern flavour, Newcastle and Carlisle are accessible by road or public transport, offering great shopping and dining to suit all tastes. For fishermen, Northumbria’s coast offers excellent opportunities and there are miles of beaches for those who simply prefer to relax.

Guestbook for 1061 - South Tyne Cottage
The cottage had everything that we could reasonably expect or need and was a true "home from home"!

,The cottage was lovely, really clean and comfortable. It was very close to Hadrian's Wall and other local attractions like The Beamish Open Air museum. The owners were really friendly and during an inpromptu power failure made sure we had a cooked breakfast! We had a lovely time.
