The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike.
Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. A
dding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Hexham / Allendale area
Allendale is an ancient parish and was once at the centre of the lead mining industry. There are still many reminders of its industrial past today, but the town has now become an attractive tourist spot in the centre of some spectacular scenery. The town is very well positioned to take advantage of the many top class tourist attractions this area has to offer and also the beautiful scenic countryside around. The city of Carlisle and the historic town of Hexham are nearby and the famous Hadrian’s Wall is only a short distance away. There are many unspoiled walks to discover, along with the Heritage Coast and the Northumberland National Park. The area is just waiting to be explored and is a delight all year round. A fabulous place for a family holiday.

Good location, good pubs and local shops. Unfortunate we did find a mouse in the house and it could have been cleaner, but we enjoyed the log fire. Verified by FlipKey, a TripAdvisor company |

,Friendly, local pubs with homemade food and a wonderful area for dog walking. Quaint village with a Cotswold feel. Allendale is a hidden gem and not too far from Hadrian's wall.
