Home description
According to village gossip, our quaint house dates back to the early 1800s when it was used as stables for the village Trading Post. It is a comfortable, spacious family holiday home in the heart of Stanford.
The interior has been furnished with eclectic shabby chic furnishings, combining old and new, and you will have no trouble kicking back and relaxing in the open plan lounge diner, with deep comfy sofas and a dining table that seats 8. There is also a Family room that houses a TV/DVD/Video and is casually furnished with beanbags, benches and chairs, so the kids can run amok or you can rest easy after that trip to the beach. The compact kitchen is well equipped with a six-ring gas stove, electric oven, fridge freezer and microwave.
The high ceilings, pale furnishings and beautiful natural light all add to a chilled ambience. The rustic verandah is perfect for outdoor dining (seats 12) and it has delightful views over the gardens and mountains – the ideal place to enjoy a sundowner.
The garden itself is wonderful for children with its large grassy area, fenced off paddock, swings, trampoline and mini-slide. They can while away the hours while you open that bottle of wine!

The Western Cape region
Situated on the banks of the Klein River, Stanford is on the coastal plain separating the mountains and the sea, about 2 hours from Cape Town International Airport. The village is mid-way between the resorts of Hermanus and Gansbaai (Goose Bay) on the Cape Whale Coast.
Featuring an assortment of renovated cottages and Cape Victorian and Edwardian architecture Stanford is regarded as one of South Africa's best-preserved villages. Its heritage status is protected both by law and by an enthusistic and dedicated conservation trust.
The surrounding valleys feature numerous vineyards, an award-winning cheesemaker and a micro-brewery. Health spas and healing, whale-watching and winemaking, hiking and horse-riding, birding and bicycles - all can be enjoyed in this scenic area. The village itself offers a range of bistros and restaurants and plenty of collectable shopping.
Stanford attracts those seeking solace and real contact with nature in all its forms - a break from urban life.
Temperature: Summer Temps range from 24° to 30°. Winter Temps range from 10° to 18°. The seasons are in reverse to the Northern Hemisphere.
Hermanus / Stanford Village area
Hermanus is just 20km away and has the status of being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. Southern right whales visit Walker Bay from June through to December and can be viewed from aboard a boat, an airplane or the shore. Hermanus is home to the world’s only Whale Crier who blows his kelp horn when whales are spotted along the central sea route.
The Whale Festival has also become a feature on the town’s calendar. Hermanus is a cosmopolitan town but has retained some of its historical fisherman’s village heritage. A number of craft markets sell a range of interesting wares, a marimba band frequently adds a vibrant atmosphere on different occasions and the old harbour with its restored fishing boats gives a glimpse of times past.
Shark cage diving provides an adrenaline fix for adventure lovers and kayaking trips on the sea or lagoon can be booked. Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers a range of spectacular walks among the fynbos. Whether you choose to spend a day on one of the spectacular beaches or playing a round of golf, Hermanus has something for everyone. Many of the shops and amenities are also wheelchair friendly.
How to get there
Fly to Cape Town International Airport. Hire a car at any of the major car hire companies at the airport. Leave the airport and join the N2 heading towards Somerset West (not Cape Town). Follow the N2 all the way to the Hermanus junction.
Take the Hermanus junction and follow to Hermanus. At Hermanus follow the signs to Stanford. Take the Stanford turn off and our road is the second on the right.
