The Western Cape region

Situated on the south western tip of Africa, the Western Cape is recognised as one of the most beautiful places in the world. It offers a range of sights and activities all year round with a mild climate of long hot summers and mild winters and an eclectic mix of people. Hermanus is situated in the Overberg region of the Western Cape and offers beautiful beaches, fabulous wines and food in some of the most beautiful locations.

The town is named after Hermanus Pieters, an old soldier who set up camp in the bay while looking for better pastures for his animals during the hot summer months. The presence of a freshwater spring persuaded him to spend the whole summer here. In the 1920’s the town gained a reputation as an excellent location for convalescing, and even doctors from Harley Street in London were recommending the “champagne air” of Hermanus.

Hermanus is also renowned as the best land based whale watching site in the world, due mainly to a 14km path along the cliffs which provides you with a bird's eye view of the Southern Right Whales who return between July and December to this bay, from Antarctica, to calve and come within 10 metres of the coast. If it isn't whale season then there are a feast of other activities, including a number of graded walks in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve or a vist to the Hemel-en-Aarde valley where some of the youngest, yet fastest growing wines are coming out of South Africa such as Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson, Hermanuspietersfontein and Newton Johnson wines. This beautiful valley is worth a visit in its own right and is a destination both for serious wine tasters and lovers of unspoilt countryside.

Hermanus / Sandbaai area

Easy outings:
Arts and crafts - many artists have settled in Hermanus and the surrounding villages of Onrus and Vermont. Visit the local craft market held in the car park near the harbour in Hermanusor local studios in the Hemel-en-Aarde village which is opposite the entrance to the development

Beaches - Grotto Beach is a blue flag beach while Onrus beach and Sculphoek bay are easily accessible from the house

Fernkloof Nature Reserve - for walks and examples of fynbos and the Harold Porter Botantical Gardens are approximately 1 hour away in Betty's Bay

Golf - the world class Arabella golf couse is approximately 20 minutes away along with Hermanus golf club and other courses are available in Kleinmond and Kleinbaai

Boat trips are available from Hermanus and Gansbaai to view the whales during the season and the renowned Hermanus Whale Festival takes place in September every year to celebrate the arrival of these wonderful animals. In addition, you can also get up close and personal to the great white shark with tours departing from Gansbaai.

Day trips to Cape Town, the wine lands of Stellenbosh, Paarl and Franschoek and a visit to the southern most point of Africa at Cape L'Agulhas are all within a 2 hour drive.

For those who want to be pampered, there are a full range of treatments available at the Arabella Sheraton Hotel, a 15 minute drive from the house and for that special treatment, massages and other beauty treatments can be arranged at the house by separate agreement.

Restaurants are in abundance in the area offering a great choice of food, one of the best Mr. B's (well we think it is) is within 5 minutes walk of the main entrance to the development.
