Near the whale-watching coast of Hermanus, in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, you'll come across Earth Cottage. It's the ideal self-catering Hermanus breakaway.

The cottage is tucked away on a smallholding in the valley, and yet it's only 6 km from the beach. It is conveniently situated on the Wine Route, perfect for exploring its 15 estates and wineries.

Hermanus town is a stone's throw away. The Whale Coast Mall is 6 km (about 4 miles).

Unusual for a farm stay, a tarred road leads right to your garden gate, where the parking area is. Down a flight of steps, and you're on the front porch of the cottage

Earth Cottage is comfortable and cosy. From the covered front porch (stoep) with a braai (BBQ) on wheels, you'll have views over the vineyards of Hamilton Russell, and our paddocks.

It is the ideal self-catering bridal retreat or stay-over for a couple, or perhaps a family of three. There is no television. You'll have free uncapped Internet. The wi-fi signal has been boosted and is reliable.

The lounge and dining area looks out over one of our paddocks. Our Arabian horses are almost always in sight.

In the kitchen you'll find a three-burner gas stove, microwave oven, kettle, mini-fridge, washing machine and ample cutlery and crockery.

Towels, linen and braaiwood will be ready for you.

There is one bedroom. It has a double bed. In the open-plan lounge and dining area there is a three-quarter bed and a sleeper couch.

Our water comes from the mountain falls. The brownish colour of the water – in the taps and in the fish pond – is the result of the roots of fynbos plants “dyeing” it.

At Earth Cottage, you'll become intensely aware of nature, even though it is a working smallholding. We live close to the earth here.

The pleasures of the rest of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus, Walker Bay, the lagune and Onrust are just down the road. La Vierge Restaurant is a mere 2 km away.

We live on the farm, so your hosts, Tino and Liane are usually around to welcome new guests. ACCESSIBILITY: A flight of stairs leads down to the cottage. The steps are uneven in height and width, and could be daunting or challenging for older or infirm visitors and people with special needs. Help is at hand to carry your luggage; just ask. Inside, there’s one step from kitchen to lounge, and another from lounge to bathroom. Two steps lead down from the lounge to the bedroom.

    Gorgeous horses and view.

    Lovely rustic escape my highlight was the beautiful horses in a paddock flanking the cottage patio, perfect for a chilled evening braai. (I dropped one mug, apologies Tino!)

    How do damage deposits work?

    In most cases, you don’t pay a damage deposit up front. Instead, we save your payment details securely and you’re only charged in the event of damage to the property.

    Occasionally, you will pay a damage deposit up front as part of the total rental cost. In this case, the owner has 10 days after you check out to report any damage. If they don’t, we’ll return your deposit. If their claim is successful, we’ll deduct the agreed cost and return the remainder.

    How do I edit my booking?

    You can request to change the dates or number of people on your booking via the Manage your holiday booking page. To change your holiday dates use the Edit booking button. If you need to change the number of guests staying then send Tino (the owner) a message.

    If Tino (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
