The Western Cape region
The Western Cape lies on southern tip of Africa, the province is one of the country's most beautiful, attracting the lion's share of foreign tourists.
It is a region of majestic mountains, colourful patchworks of farmland set in lovely valleys, long beaches and, further inland, the wide-open landscape of the semidesert Karoo.
Stanford, which dates back to 1729, is a victorian GEM and one of the best architecturally preserved villages in the Overberg.
Stanford was named after Robert Stanford from Ballina in Ireland, who became a tragic victim of anti-convict agitation protesting against the British Government's decision to settle convicts in the cape. It is situated on the banks of the Klein River only 10 minutes outside Hermanus and 1.5 hours from Cape Town. Sample award winning Gruyere Cheese at the nearby Klein River dairy farm or just stroll around the village and enjoy the interesting local restaurants and pubs.
Some excellent wines are being produced in the area - the estates of Raka, Weltevrede and Sir Robert Stanford are worth a visit to sample their products.
"The African Queen" is very popular for sunset river cruises. Bring your own picnic or braai, whilst leisurely sailing down the river. Spot a purple Gallineau, Fish Eagle, Malecite Kingfisher or other exotic birds. Stanford is the birding capital of the Overberg and the professionally guided tours are very popular.
The annual Stanford festivals take place in October and co-incide with the Glendowner Birding Festival.
