The Western Cape region
The Western Cape Overberg region.
Hermanus is famous for whale watching. The whale season stretches from June to December when hundreds of southern right whales come north from the polar regions to the warmer waters of Walker Bay to mate and calve. Tour boats sail from the New Harbour.
There is an important penguin colony at Betty's Bay some 30kms away and an abundance of nature reserves within 40 kms of Hermanus
Enjoy wine tasting at the local Hemel en Aarde valley wine farms and include a meal also at the 5 star wine farm restaurants such as Creation.
Go shark cage diving in Gansbaai
For the outdoor person:
Have a swim in the sea or at least a paddle ( Voelklip, Grotto and Onrus)
Hermanus has stress relieving cliff walks and Fernkloof Nature Reserve looking over the town where one can walk/hike.
On the calm days Kayak on the ocean with seals, penguins and even whales close by.
Mountain bike ( bikes for hire locally) up the Hemel en Aarde Valley on pre set routes.
Trail run also on the mountain bike routes.
Hang gliding from the mountains
Hermanus Golf Club has 27 holes and is a top course in the country. Arabella close by is in the top 10.
Fishing, both off the rocks and off boats, is popular along the local coast.
For the not so active or on active days off
Hermanus was originally a resort where Europeans came to for recuperation where it is renowned for its Champagne air. So just sitting on the many benches on the cliff path and just looking at the coves and the sea with a whale there or not is still an absolute pleasure you will not tire of. There are many spa's where the ladies can rejuvenate also.
Hermanus village has many restaurants, Bientangs Cave is on the rocks. There are quaint shops and if you have a longer stay there are excellent top quality supermarkets.
