The Austrian Alps region

Kärnten (Carinthia) is the southernmost Austrian state or Land and is chiefly famous for its mountains and lakes.

It consists mostly of a basin inside the Alps, with the Carnian Alps and the Karawanken making up the border to Italy and Slovenia. The Tauern mountains divide it from Salzburg. To the East lies the state of Styria and it makes up a continuous valley with the eastern part of the Tyrol to the West. Its lakes are a major tourist attraction. The main river is the Drau.

The capital is Klagenfurt and the next important town is Villach. These two towns are strongly linked economically. Kärnten's main industries are tourism, electronics, engineering, forestry and agriculture. The multinational corporations Philips and Siemens have large operations there.

Kärnten has a continental climate with hot and moderately wet summers and long harsh winters. In recent decades winters have been exceptionally arid. Average sun index is the highest in Austria. In autumn and winter temperature inversion often dominates the climate, characterised by air stillness, a dense fog covering the frosty valleys, while mild sunny weather is recorded higher up in the foothills and mountains.

Hermagor

Hermagor

Hermagor, our home town, is the county town and administrative centre for the central Gailtal and the 30 villages surrounding it. It is a small town but has plenty of supermarkets, shops and restaurants. The famous Semmelrock Konditerei, reputedly one of the best in Austria and where everyone meets for coffee and cakes or a light lunch, lies in the central square, the Gasserplatz. Most Saturday mornings there is a Farmers' Market offering local produce including Gailtaler Speck (bacon), cheeses and honey, the produce for which the area is deservedly famous.

The Presseggersee lies to the east of the town and the fabulous Nassfeld Ski Arena is only a few minutes by car to the west. The area offers endless opportunities for both summer and winter activities with many kilometers of dedicated trails for walking, cycling, horse riding and golf at the Gailtal Golf Club. Visit the golf club website: www.gailtalgolf.eu for full information about the facilities on offer.

The area has good road and rail links. The railway runs the full length of the Gailtal and offers regular services to Villach from where there are trains to the rest of Europe.

Klagenfurt airport (Ryanair) is about a 45 minute drive away and it is only about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive to Ljublijana airport (Easy Jet) in Slovenia.

Presseggersee

Beautifully located amid mountains, forests and meadows, the crystal-clear Pressegger See boasts super clean water fit for drinking and, thanks to the many sunshine hours here, it is one of Austria's warmest swimming lakes.

Sports: swimming, wind surfing, sailing, fishing, Nordic walking around the lake.

Facilities: bathing beach with large play area, boat rental, wind surfing school, sports and leisure center, fun park, camping sites, hotels
