BookThe Coastal Montenegro / Boka Kotorska Fjord region
Montenegro is a former republic of Yugoslavia but is now fully independent. It is located on the Adriatic Sea and, as well as having a stunning coastline, has some spectacular mountain scenery. Its stormy history has left a rich collection of monuments dating from the various civilisations and cultures that have existed in this region. It regularly celebrates its colourful history with cultural and artistic events, carnivals and folk festivals. The country has four national parks, and the Bay of Kotor has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In recognition of the emphasis that the country places upon the protection of its natural resources, in 1991 it was proclaimed an Ecological State. The language of Montenegro is Serbian, but English is widely spoken in the main tourist areas.
The Herceg Novi / Djenovici area
The medieval city of Herceg Novi is located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. It was founded by the Bosnian King Tvrtko I in 1382. Its defensive role is witnessed by numerous fortresses and towers. Today these are open-air stages where film, music and flower festivals are held. A characteristic feature of the city is its parks and gardens with numerous plant species of foreign origin: palms, cikasi, magnolia, agave, banana and other Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants. It also has several beautiful squares with historic churches, galleries and museums as well as many fine restaurants and open-air cafés.
Excursions available in the area include:
Exploring the medieval city of Dubrovnik, with its many fine cafés, bars and restuarants, which each summer hosts the world-famous Dubrovnik Festival.
Visiting the historic Ostrog Monastery which is situated against an almost vertical background high up in the large rock of Ostroška Greda.
Taking a boat trip around the Bay of Kotor including visits to the church of the Lady of the Rock on the island of Gospa od Skrpjela and the medieval towns of Perast and Kotor.
Travelling out by night on a glass-bottomed boat to the island of Mamula to view the rich underwater beauty beneath, illuminated by searchlights to a depth of 15 metres.
Visiting Skadar Lake in the world-renowned Skadar Lake National Park - part of the largest wetland and bird reservation in Europe.
Taking a guided tour, in an air-conditioned minibus, of the coastal region of Montenegro and its historic towns of Perast, Njegusi, Cetinje and Budva.
Experiencing the challenge and excitement of white water rafting on grade III rapids in the Tara Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe.
Guided kayaking, including full instruction, around the Bay of Kotor or on Skadar Lake.
Enjoying the challenges and excitement of the high ropes adventure course at Lovcen Adventure Park followed by travelling to the summit of Mount Lovcen with its spectacular views over the Bay of Kotor.
