The Boka Kotorska Fjord region
Having holidayed in Montenegro for many years I can safely claim that the Boka Kotorska Fjord has been, until recently, one of the undiscovered gems of the Adriatic. The luscious mountain scenery, clear blue sea and stone cottages of the Boka Kotorska Fjord are so beautiful, the area is protected by UNESCO.
A monastery is located in the sea within the fjord which has become a popular tourist attraction. The climate is warm Mediterranean with spring and autumn temperatures of 25-28C and very hot summers sometimes reaching 35-40C in mid-summer. Boat trips on the fjord leading to the medieval town of Kotor enable the holidaymaker to enjoy the spectacular scenery and glorious sunshine from the sea and furthermore provide excellent value for money and often include wine and the local brandy. Sea trips to other local seaside atttractions such as the crystal turquoise water of the Blue Cave, the Mamula fortress and Rosa, Zanjice and Miriste beaches are available in the Boka peninsula during the summer season.
A visit to other popular Montenegrin resorts such as Budva with its beautiful sandy beaches and night life, or a tour by minibus around the 50 or so miles of the fjord will offer the holidaymaker the treat of a lifetime. Likewise, Dubrovnik, known as the pearl of the Adriatic, which lies just over the border in Croatia can be reached and explored by coach, minibus, taxi or by sea. If you enjoy mountain scenery, take a trip up the mountainside to the old historical city of Cetinje with its famous museum and spectacular sea, lake and mountain views. The local currency is the Euro.
Herceg Novi area
Herceg Novi lies at the mouth of the Boka Kotorska Fjord. It is an old stone-walled resort built in medieval times up the mountainside, thus every apartment has a "room with a view". Besides lazing on the local sandy and shingle or rocky beaches, why not explore the medieval old walled town, which with its nooks and crannies and old cobbled streets it is a true delight.
Stop a while at one of the many local cafes or restaurants offering the very best of fresh sea food or meat specialities of the region. Restaurants and cafes are much cheaper than in neighbouring Croatia, for example a 3 course meal for 2 at a local restaurant of repute will cost approx 30-40 Euros inclusive. Take time to relax in Montenegro, the pace of life is slow and relaxed and the locals are very friendly and hospitable. Knowledge of English is good in most local taverns and restaurants.Herceg Novi is known by locals as the "Floral Town" as many sea-farers over the ages brought back various exotic plant samples from exciting far-off places and planted them on every available spare piece of ground along the mountain side.
There are many festivals, carnivals and open-air concerts throughout the year starting with the Mimoza festival on the first Saturday in February. The beautiful Sava monastery which lies on high ground above the town is well worth a visit with magnificent views over the fiord.
Take a walk along the coastal path which stretches approximately 10 kilometres from Herceg Novi to the neighbouring resort of Igalo, a coastal spa and health resort. The walk could take a few hours if contemplated in its entirety but there are cafes and restaurants about every 50 metres so no need to worry about being either hungry of thirsty while on your walk - just take in the breathtaking sea and mountain views. Do I sound over enthusiastic about Montenegro? Why not see for yourself - you will be very pleasantly surprised. James Bond certainly liked it as featured in the film "Casino Royale"!
