The Crete region

Crete (or Kriti) is the largest of the Greek Islands and is bathed in 320 days of sunshine a year.

Whatever your passion Crete has it in abundance. With long hot summers and mild winters it is the ideal year round holiday destination now serviced with regular flights to both Heraklion and Chania international airports.

Steeped in history and mystery, Crete takes you on an epic journey from the birth of the God Zeus; past Odyssey, Homers classic poem following the wanderings of Odysseus and on to the creation of the Minoan civilization. The modern era is no less impressive bringing you the paintings of El Greco and the writings of Nikos Kazantzakis perhaps better known as the films the Last Tempation of Christ and Zorba the Greek.

Crete has a wealth of natural beauty from snow capped mountains to beautiful beaches and rocky coves. Dotted amongst the best that nature has to offer are ancient Minoan ruins; charming villages and of course the odd Taverna serving delicious regional food and wine.

Heraklion/Iraklion / Fodele area

Set on a private complex, with both pool and Jacuzzi, Emathia is just a short stroll from the delightful park, the village square and the welcoming tavernas and shops of Fodele village.

Emathias private courtyard garden provides the perfect spot for a bite to eat while the roof terrace and two balconies offer stunning views over citrus groves to the mountains beyond. Whether you are looking for sunshine around the pool or shade on the covered veranda, Emathia provides it in equal measure.

Fodele is set in a verdant valley of Orange and Lemon groves. Along the main village road ladies sell linen, lace and embroidery and there are traditional stalls selling citrus fruits. The river Pantomantis meanders through the village, mirroring the pace of life of its inhabitants and cools the breeze for its visitors. Over the bridge delightful streets lined with rustic, flower-decked dwellings provide a glimse of the hidden Crete that package holidays never see.

Birth place of the artist El Greco and site of the Byzantine Church of the Panagia, Fodele combines history and culture amid an extraordinary variety of flora, forna and wildlife.

Should you ever tire of the peace and quiet of the village, Fodele is only a few minutes drive from the beautiful resorts of Agia Pelagia and Lygaria. Within half an hour you can be wandering around the ancient Minoan palace at Knossos or marvelling at the worlds richest collection of Minoan art at the Museum of Archaeology.

The main highway is a short drive away providing direct access to the rest of Crete’s attractions, such as the Minoan Summer Palace (Agia Triada) and the Samaria Gorge. When the journey home can be put off no longer, the highway will also take you to the islands airports and ferry terminals.

Guestbook for Emathia

We had a fantastic holiday! The house was lovely, clean when we arrived, The house had everything we needed, and more, and was an ideal starting point for sightseeing-which we did quite a bit of, as well as beach/pool. The village was great, after a week all the locals knew us, and we felt very welcome in the local supermarkets, shops, and by the roadside sellers, where we sampled a lot of the local goods (Raki hangover and flying back with two toddlers-not good!). We particularly liked that everyone was so childfriendly, that, particularly in the evenings, it was not very touristy, and the beautiful surroundings." Claudia 2009

"I just want to tell you that we now are back in Denmark after a fantastic week in Fodele. We have been very satisfied with both the house, the surroundings, the village and the friendlyness of the people. It was an ideal place for a family with children. We will definitily recommend it to other and maybe we will come back another year." Sune 2009

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your lovely house. The kids especially enjoyed the pool....we loved the village wedding our first Saturday (just like in mamma Mia!!)" 2008

"Villa Emathia was brilliant, thank you..... It was like being in a bubble away from the stresses and strains of the outside world. The village soon adopted us and we became very friendly with the locals. We were invited to our first Greek wedding - they certainly know how to celebrate" 2008

"We had a WONDERFUL time! The views were incredible from our balcony. Our favourite restaurant was the last one at the edge of town, near the "Fodele" sign... my mom said it was the best meal we ever had. I'm drooling thinking about it now! The village was just gorgeous" Dana 2008

"There is nothing you can do to improve your Villa" - Anita Vandercolff

"Your house was just wonderful" - Ian and Cherry Plant

""Thank you for this fantastic holiday" - Jenny Fung
