Home description

Set in the heart of a traditional Greek village beside a leafy park with a picturesque river and surrounded by orange groves. It is secluded yet close to (50m) a selection of excellent tavernas and small shops with very friendly local people. It is the ideal location for relaxing or for exploring the island. A beautiful beach nearby and wonderful views of the mountains complete the idyll.
We are an English couple who live here all year round and we will be delighted to help you enjoy your holiday to the full. Tell us what you want--walking, bird watching, eating and drinking, golf, sightseeing, boat trips, watersports or just plain 'chilling out'! We will even provide food and drinks by the pool so you don't have to move at all!

The Crete region

Crete is the largest of the greek islands and is the most southerly point in Europe. It has a wonderful climate with long hot summers and short, mild (though unpredictable!) winters.
It is awash with fascinating history dating back to Minoan times. The famous Knossos Palace, said to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, is sited close by in Heraklion where there are several excellent museums to visit. Crete can lay claim to the birthplace of Zeus, and Fodele, (on a slightly more mortal plane!) to the birthplace of El Greco.
For a slice of more recent history, visit the old hippie colony of Matala with its beautiful beach and ancient caves where the hippies used to camp out!
There are so many places of interest here that people come back year after year.

Heraklion/Iraklion / Fodele area

For more earthly pleasures, we have golf (a PGA course 35km away), watersports (diving, windsurfing, waterskiing, banana boats etc.) and boat trips from our local beach, an aquarium, two waterparks, many fabulous beaches, great tavernas with excellent food, and plenty of shopping opportunities!
For keen walkers or birdwatchers, Crete is hard to beat. --Or of course, you could just chill out!
In Fodele you will experience the truly Cretan way of life as it is still very much an agricultural village with it's olive and orange groves, sheep, goats, vines and vegetable plots (and the occasional donkey!). It is like stepping back in time but, thankfully, with modern conveniences! You will be offered oranges, locally made wine and rachi wherever you go--the locals do not like you to refuse!
As the birthplace of El Greco we have a small museum located in his house and several commemorative statues around the village.

How to get there

Fodele Village is situated approximately 30km from Heraklion airport. Take the main highway towards Rethymnon and keep going! It is very easy to find.
Flights to Heraklion (HER) airport are available from April to October with many companies including MyTravel, Thomson, BA, First Choice, and Olympic.
From November to March you must Fly to Athens (Easyjet is very reasonably priced!) then fly with Olympic or Agean to Heraklion. If you book a 'through' flight then your baggage will be transferred automatically and is much easier.
Alternatively you can catch one of the ferries (Minoan Lines or Agean) which leave from Piraeus, Athens each evening and arrive early morning in Heraklion.
Most times we will be able to pick you up (25 euros) but preferably not in the middle of the night! Otherwise, there are always plenty of taxis waiting (approx. 40 euros) If you wish to hire a car then we can arrange it for you and you can pick it up at the airport.
Fodele beach is beautiful and is 3km from the village --we will provide lifts, don't worry!

*This has been the most relaxing chill out holiday we have ever had! All in all a top holiday. Dave and Julia.
*Just spent a lovely and relaxing week here in Fodele. the apartment has everything you require. The bars and restaurants in the village are great - and cheap!! We hope to be back soon. Dave, Lesley and Matthew.
*'Nerine' is a perfect little apartment in beautiful Fodele. It has everything you need, with cooking facilities (not that we did much as the restaurants were too yummy), wet room, little patio to chill, eat breakfast and have an evening drink. The little taverns in walking distance are really nice and having Fodele beach just down the road is perfect. We will be booking to stay next year. Tray and Nathan.
*Fodele is the most peaceful and relaxing place I have ever spent my holiday. The apartment was perfect....everything we could ask for and more! BRILLIANT HOLIDAY! We will return. Tom and Caz.
