The Crete region

Crete is the largest of the greek islands and is the most southerly point in Europe. It has a wonderful climate with long hot summers and short, mild (though unpredictable!) winters.

It is awash with fascinating history dating back to Minoan times. The famous Knossos Palace, said to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, is sited close by in Heraklion where there are several excellent museums to visit. Crete can lay claim to the birthplace of Zeus, and Fodele, (on a slightly more mortal plane!) to the birthplace of El Greco.

For a slice of more recent history, visit the old hippie colony of Matala with its beautiful beach and ancient caves where the hippies used to camp out!

There are so many places of interest here that people come back year after year.

For more earthly pleasures, we have golf (a PGA course 35km away), watersports (diving, windsurfing, waterskiing, banana boats etc.) and boat trips from our local beach, an aquarium, two waterparks, many fabulous beaches, great tavernas with excellent food, and plenty of shopping opportunities!

For keen walkers or birdwatchers, Crete is hard to beat. --Or of course, you could just chill out!

In Fodele you will experience the truly Cretan way of life as it is still very much an agricultural village with it's olive and orange groves, sheep, goats, vines and vegetable plots (and the occasional donkey!). It is like stepping back in time but, thankfully, with modern conveniences! You will be offered oranges, locally made wine and rachi wherever you go--the locals do not like you to refuse!

As the birthplace of El Greco we have a small museum located in his house and several commemorative statues around the village.

"We just love coming back."

We have just booked Verbena for a third time. We would have booked it when we came in May but it wasn't available. Mandarin Grove is a beautifully maintained complex, and Verbena has everything that we could ask for; clean, tidy, stunning view looking over orange trees to the hills from the balcony, at a good price. Ken & Helen were the perfect “local guides” offering us useful information about the area. We went on various local walks in the hills and just love coming back.

"A great stay in a typical Greek village - Bliss"

This is a beautiful little complex of only about 10 apartments. It has a little roof terrace and an outdoor pool surrounded by tables, chairs and parasols, plus a BBQ.
The complex itself is set alongside the village stream, and a two minute walk across the bridge brings you to the many restaurants of this lovely working village.
The apartments are surrounded by mandarin groves to the front and the local school to one side, and the local church at the bottom of the back garden. Beware of the call to church on a Sunday! It's very loud, but just typically Greek.
Our apartment was a one bedroom apartment, which had a nice airy bedroom with its only balcony complete with chairs. There was a built in wardrobe complete with iron and ironing board, plus a chest of drawers, so plenty of storage. There was a wet room (remember to remove the loo roll before putting the shower on!). Then in the lounge kitchen area, there was a sofa, which converts into a bed, plus a mini oven, tv/dvd player, and sufficient crockery for your stay. There was also a shelf full of books for you to read during your stay. From this living area there was a balcony complete with table and chairs and clothes dryer, which looked over the mandarin grove and the hills. Beautifully scenic.
It is about 2 miles from the nearest beach but it is downhill. We hired a car, but I don't suppose you need one unless you want to get to the beach, although you could walk downhill and hope someone will give you a lift coming back up, which they often do. We did hire a car, however we didn't bother going to one of the bigger supermarkets, we made do with the local butcher, baker and little supermarket, to keep the revenue in the village.
We loved it so much we are heading back there in June 2012.
Pictures to follow when I've loaded them on my computer
